Good place to work!

Pros

I've been at CalOptima for more than 15 years, and it's the best place I've ever worked in my 45+ year work history. They are mission-focused and care about their employees.

Cons

Salaries may not quite measure up to private sector jobs, but the benefits are great! I've had a few not-so-nice managers, but for the past three years, my director and manager are great. We have a good department, and I work on a great team. With more than 1,100 employees, you have to expect that not all of them will be gems.

Pros

I work for the CalOptima PACE program. It's an amazing program and fun place to work. Management on the other hand?

Cons

Silos, Morale is very low due to management nit picking at dress code.

Rigorous Background Check

Pros

Great benefits. Company culture is ok, if not a little disorganized. The company has a great on-boarding process; and it's apparent that employees do matter here, to a certain extent. But depending on your specific department, middle management can tend to be extremely unprofessional.

Cons

Middle management is a glorified version of a babysitter. If you're expecting a career path, you'd better not rely on middle management, as they tend to oppress innovation and stifle your growth. Exempt (salary) employees are held accountable to a strict 8 hour schedule, despite the company wide weigh/grade scale between NonExempt vs Exempt employees for yearly reviews. Exempts are weighed 0% on "Reliability", per company standards, but if you're unfortunate enough to land yourself a babysitter of a manager, you'll be reprimanded (publicly) just the same. Because you're dealing with healthcare laws and regulations (i.e., HIPA, PHI, etc.), expect to be hindered by lots of bureaucratic red tape.
