Pros

CalOptima Health being a public entity, has great benefits from CalPERS, PARS, and minimal employee contribution for Medical and Dental. The team I worked under provided me with a great opportunity to learn Medi-Cal compliance. The teams manager also allowed for some autonomy on many projects. Very personable leaders!

Cons

Unfortunately, the organization overall has many leaders fighting for a spot at a table where decisions impacting members are being made. There seems to be several leaders outside of the Compliance realm that focuses more how they can make themselves look good. Although the organization recently had a rebranding, they have yet to rebrand how they are perceived in the community. It appears executive leadership only cares for the photo-op than the opportunity to contribute to the community they serve. Also, the Compliance culture needs to be reinforced from the staff line of other departments. Much work cannot be done unless for the cooperation of other departments. It’s a stressful role, however, very rewarding.

Pros

They offer decent Insurance Benefits

Cons

They hire people with degrees but insufficient experience. Credentials are worthless if you can’t fulfill the expectations and responsibilities of the job. Nepotism is abundant, which results in incompetent leaders placed in positions where they can’t manage their own team/department. Staff are overworked, unhappy and stressed. This company does not believe in or provide a positive work life balance. They’re trying to obtain the elusive five star rating, however, changes are made in the wrong areas.

Pros

Healthcare is complex and fast-paced. You need a great team to be able to come together and get the job done, and there are no better people than at CalOptima. From the CEO on down, the member is the focus and we are pushed to constantly keep them at the forefront.

Cons

Communication between execs and other mid-level leaders is not as consistent or streamlined as it needs to be.
