Board of Directors and Executives are the Problem

Pros

My team was like a mini family. Yes, there were ups and down, but at the end of the day, we had each other's backs and worked together to accomplish our department goals.

Cons

CalOptima is overseen by an unsympathetic Board of Directors and run by a spineless executive team. CalOptima fails to realize that employee morale directly impacts member care. Yes, a majority of funds should be directed at member care, but lets not forget the employees who make that happen, whether out in the field or behind-the-scenes at the office. Due to the careless actions of the Board and executive leadership's failure to stand up for their employees, CalOptima will experience another brain drain that led to the severe failures experienced in the early 2010s. If you haven't read up on that, I suggest you do so.

Pros

Decent pension, work life balance, lower level employees are decent people

Cons

People in executive management with high school diplomas who act like trash and treat people like trash. Told that if you work hard that you can get a five annual performance score but the management makes sure scores are adjusted downwards to a 3 to minimize increases. Also you are told if you go above and beyond you’ll get spot awards. Hardly any get approved because hardly anyone rises to that level. Go work there is you are ok with being unappreciated

Pros

The majority of the employees are enjoyable to work with.

Cons

Like any places of employment, there are bad apples but unfortunately management takes too long to rectify the situation and do not recognize the hard work of those who make regular contributions for the success of the department, in addition to Human Resources not being educated enough to deal with situations that arise accordingly - to many management issues to be addressed in a more timely manner.

Pros

Some people are nice and skilled at their duties.

Cons

I was warned about working at CalOptima but I accepted the position anyways. I wish I had not. My supervisor and manager were cruel, condescending, and enjoyed tearing me down. There is destructive and untrue gossip that takes place at CalOptima and stops you from advancing or joining another department. HR knows about it and does nothing. I was knowledgeable about my job and had a vast amount of experience but because I wasn’t like my supervisor/manager they made my work life the worst experience of my life. To top it off, lies spread by one person, that I didn’t even work with on a regular basis, prevented moving to another team. I learned that this other team felt that I was a strong candidate until they heard the gossip. Nobody even asked me about why they heard. I ended up quitting and content and valued at where I am now. CalOptima has a high turnover rate so it’s not just me who runs away from this organization.
