Pros

Smart people everywhere, cutting edge research, great talks by world-class speakers. Since money in science is hard to come by these days, academic institutes such as caltech are suffering, and their employees with it.

Cons

Class system with definite 'old boys club' attitude. Promotion in the academic or staff stream is next to impossible except in a few departments.

Pros

-Good benefits and reasonable pay -Good work-life balance (for hourly employees) -Nice campus -Opportunities for community and education -Some departments function really well and when things go smoothly, it can be a great job

Cons

-Extremely hierarchical and emphasis on being "subordinate" to management; HR takes the stance that the boss is always right -Hiring and promotion choices are often based on personal connections rather than qualifications -Administration can be old-fashioned and unwilling to ruffle feathers even when it's the right thing to do

Pros

Decent benefits and other perks like tuition reimbursement, gym on campus. (Even though you have to pay. Still cheaper than a regular him ) Good time off benefits.

Cons

If you are faculty it's great. You can literally do whatever you. If you are staff there's no training, no support, and you are thrown under the bus on a daily. While you have good time of benefits don't try to use them or be sick. Upper management hates when you do that.
