Pros

They have a great name and lots of resources. The campus is beautiful.

Cons

They literally told us at our HR orientation that Caltech pays with its name. Salaries are low, there are no merit raises, bonuses, accolades, awards, rewards, or career advancement for research staff. The place is rampant with misogyny, nepotism, discrimination, and egotism. People who try to call this out get eliminated.

Pros

Great architecture and lovely grounds

Cons

There is a fair amount of it must be invented here mentality, which makes sense for research but is enormously ineffective for administration of a relatively small institution. There is a lot of stress and pressure on the employees, and entrenched employees with serious HR issues.

Pros

Competitive Compensation and Benefits: Many departments offer salaries and benefits that are competitive with leading institutions, which can be a significant advantage for employees. Prestigious Environment: Working at Caltech provides an opportunity to add a prestigious name known globally for its historical contributions to science and technology.

Cons

Resistance to Technological Advancements: There is a noticeable reluctance within the institution to embrace modern technologies, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, which is concerning given its reputation as a leading technology institute. Outdated Management Practices: The leadership, including the higher management and Board of Trustees, often appears out of touch with the needs of a contemporary university, impacting decision-making and strategic directions. Questionable Financial Decisions: Instances of questionable management of substantial donations raise concerns about the integrity and transparency of financial decisions at the executive level. Stressful Work Environment: The workplace culture can be overly competitive and isolating, which may lead to significant stress and impact personal health and wellness. Cultural Issues: There's a lack of a supportive and collaborative culture; instead, the environment is often described as competitive, with a noticeable undercurrent of dissatisfaction among staff and students.
