Pros

Mix with some of the best academics in the world. Engage in groundbreaking research. Enjoy the excellent dining at the Athenaeum. Pasadena is a great place to live.

Cons

Rather small and parochial. Little scope for advancement for staff. Limited diversity. Students tend to be highly nerdy and awkward. Constant new building construction dotted across campus.

Not worth it.

Pros

Looks good on the resume.

Cons

Caltech is a pressure cooker. They hire very smart people and dumb them down by assigning stupid tasks with no support. Do not speak out or exercise an employee right or you'll be retaliated against. Provost Stolper is an arrogant dictator. Thus far, Rosenbaum doesn't seem any better. HR/legal is like the Third Reich. Google "Caltech retaliation lawsuit" and read the entire espionage lawsuit posted online. Caltech does not deserve to keep JPL. It's not worth working at Caltech.

Pros

Benefits are wonderful - days off (with pay) between Christmas and New Year's, 3 weeks of vacation upon start, employer pays a large percentage of insurance premiums Beautiful campus in a park-like setting Highly intelligent people Excellent reputation Stability - Caltech is not going anywhere!

Cons

Politics are reminiscent of high school Entrenched mediocrity is rewarded Excessive emphasis on collaboration stalls many projects and initiatives; there's a meeting for everything Results are not ultimately not rewarded and are undervalued to preserve and maintain relationships Employees with longetivy are valued even when they are no longer contributing; newcomers are often perceived as a threat to the status quo The values communicated to staff are not adhered to by management
