Lesson learned: if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…it’s a duck. No matter how much I tried to convince myself (or how much they tried to convince me) that it was a dream job, it was in fact more toxic than any job I’ve ever had. Whatever job you choose to take here working for Disney Food Blog and AllEars; your time is underpaid and undervalued. Writers, photographers, reporters, everyone. The pay is beyond disrespectful, but they’ll tell you pay increases are coming. That never happens, even if you’re always putting out great content, taking on more roles, and hitting your goals (or even going beyond the goals set for you). You’ll see quickly that those who work the hardest and do the best will get hounded with even more work. To the point where their best employees are breaking mentally. But they won’t pull back expectations. And let’s talk about time. You’ll be expected to work overtime on the fly, due to the insane amount of content they expect you to provide. It doesn’t matter what plans you have for the day, or what’s going on in your personal life. So…with the expectation for employees to sacrifice their personal time with NO notice, you’d expect to get time off approved (with notice provided)…right?! Absolutely not. Holidays, birthdays, huge events — no time is guaranteed off. Even when you give them months of notice. They’ll guilt and berate you for requesting time off. So while you’re expected to work overtime on the fly, there’s ZERO flexibility when it comes to you needing time off. Managers are obviously being given strict requirements from upper management. But no one cares when a mass exodus occurs; which happens all the time. Literally, the writing and reporting staff is unrecognizable. They don’t care about you. They know they’ll pull in more unsuspecting, hopeful fans, work them into the ground, and repeat the cycle. And while these fans are making the blogs a ton of money, they’ll make FAR LESS than anyone else in the industry. You’ll get paid more at many fast food joints. The day I drove past a Chick-fil-A sign that said $19/hour was their starting rate and I was JEALOUS, I knew something was wrong. Please reconsider working here. At best, you’ll be overworked, stressed out, leave, and lose any respect you had for these blogs/owners. At worst, your mental health will take a blow, your lack of a work/life balance will result in issues in your life, and you’ll be running for the hills only months in.
