Pros

Very communicative managers. Provided feedback on performance, job training is really tailored to the individual. Benefits package for part time associates was fair. I was proud of the product I sold. Flat commission was great. Sell a Ford Fusion, sell a Mercedes C class, same commission - no pressure to put people in the wrong car. I felt good about that.

Cons

Part-times sales consultants have evening and weekend shifts. As a second job, it was hard to meet with customers who needed a second appointment to finish the sale. Often times, I would have to partner with another consultant and then I would only get half of the commission.

Pros

For not requiring a college degree being a sales consultant at CarMax isnt a bad job at all. You have every opportunity to make at least 40k a year shortly after you finish training. It really is a better work environment than other car lots. Steady flow of customers through the door.

Cons

Management micromanages the crap out of you. There is no hourly rate so the job is pure commission. On top of tha the comission you make is the same ob every car as it is a flat rate which means we're probably making a good bit less than sales consultants at other lots. Having said that, managers are constantly helping you find something to do or telling you when you can go to lunch which gets old quick when you spend you're whole day taking their crap amd dont make a dime for it. The current LGM is one of the fakest corporate cookie cutter bosses I've ever seen. He seriously is one of those people who gets off on hearing hinself talk so get lick getting a ny favors from him. He has seriously brought the morale of the entire store down with his controlling and unsympathetic attitiude not to mention his lack of involvement in the actual store.

Pros

Very family oriented company. I get days that I need off, sick time, vacation and paid holidays. Very easy to "sell" the product to uninformed customers. 40Hours a week at a car sales job! Great environment, everyone is friends.

Cons

Everyone is friends...Special treatment for certain people. You will only succeed if management likes you. empty promises of promotions etc. 5HR maximum work allowed before a break, which just doesn't work in the car business. Pointless, unpaid, mandatory meetings. I make what the low man makes at a traditional dealer and I am one of the top sales. Pay is horrible. One raise since 1999 for CA. Micro Managed 24/7. Customers can return cars and you get absolutely nothing! They consistently call you on your days off, transfer cars get sold when you are not there. All they care about is budget. The average sales person at my store in CA makes an avg of $15/HR.
