Overall Functional, a Few Career Micromanagers
Pros
Decent pay, good benefits. Many departments are well-managed. Upper management is somewhat accessible to the common worker. Interesting committee work available to those who are willing to seek it out and show up.
Cons
Management of this particular department maintained staff in a siloed condition. Lead worker of 8 years did not understand basic daily standards and regs of the job, and peer staff turnover was very high. No opportunity for training or professional development or contact with external peers offered to certain specialized staff. Micromanaged daily work was difficult to deal with, as the poor work of one employee resulted in micromanagement for all. Unqualified or underqualified staffers at competitive pay were allowed to work to lower basic performance and production standards than more-qualified and productive staff. Technology very behind the times. Company focus on being "special" resulted in the purchase of an IT enterprise solution product that was poorly-crafted for the company's needs, which impacted staff ability to work for years. Key departments left behind on outdated, poorly functioning systems. Had I had the vision to take a pay cut and move laterally to get out of the very poorly managed unit I was in, I am certain I would still be a very happy camper at CareOregon. Many well-managed departments to choose from. Just not the one I was in, which has continued to have that reputation amongst workers and contractors in different departments across the org.
