Unorganized, Inefficient, and Overwhelming

Pros

My coworkers were supportive, kind and a pleasure to work with, which made navigating an otherwise difficult, high-pressure, and stressful job more bearable.

Cons

I joined the company feeling hopeful and excited, but that optimism quickly faded due to a lack of structure and organization, a disjointed onboarding process, an unsustainable workload, and overall inefficient practices. -Structure and Organization: The company relies heavily on tools such as Asana and Looker Studio, to the extent that when these platforms experience issues, workflows across the organization are derailed. Communication is often fragmented, with conversations easy to lose, inconsistent naming conventions, and excessive time spent determining where information should be shared rather than completing the work itself. There are also frequently too many people assigned to a single account, which creates confusion around roles and responsibilities and contributes to a “too many cooks in the kitchen” dynamic. As a result, it felt like employees were expected to be experts in every aspect of the account, and significant time was spent on calls that were not directly relevant to their work due to overlapping responsibilities across teams. The internal CRM was also extremely disorganized, difficult to navigate, outdated and inefficient, especially when compared to the many intuitive and user-friendly CRM options available. Additionally, employees, including salaried staff, were required to track time across multiple platforms. While this data may be valuable from a company perspective, the cumulative time spent on tracking felt exhausting and inefficient from an employee standpoint. -Onboarding Process: Onboarding began strong with group training that covered company fundamentals, but quickly became disjointed. Many team-specific resources were outdated, missing, or nearly impossible to locate when needed. Although much of the onboarding was self-guided, there were limited opportunities to practice or apply what was being learned. As a result, it was difficult to retain information and confidently perform tasks once they became part of the role. -Unsustainable Workload: The workload expected of employees managing multiple clients was excessive and often felt unsustainable. Employees were required to monitor an extremely high volume of conversations across multiple platforms. Basic information was frequently requested, which could have been minimized with a well-organized and user-friendly CRM. Instead, inefficient systems added unnecessary complexity and significantly increased day-to-day stress.

Thank you for your candid and detailed feedback regarding your time at Carnegie. We appreciate you highlighting the strengths of our remote flexibility and the talent of your colleagues, but we take your concerns regarding salary inequity and workload very seriously. It is difficult to hear that our mission of 'human connection' felt at odds with your internal experience. We strive to ensure our compensation is competitive and fair across all levels, and your feedback regarding the gap between market rates and internal salaries provides us with an important perspective. Additionally, we hear your concerns regarding our AI initiatives. Our goal is to leverage technology to enhance—not replace—the human element of our work, and we regret that this has resulted in increased pressure rather than increased support for our teams. Please reach out to hr@carnegiehighered.com with any additional comments.

Great Colleagues, Unsustainable Workloads.

Pros

Strong employee relationships. I’ve met so many truly incredible people here — talented, supportive, and genuinely wonderful colleagues. The individual contributors are the reason this company continues to succeed. People show up for each other, problem-solve together, and carry an enormous amount of responsibility with care and dedication. Unfortunately, while employees are the backbone of this company’s success, there isn’t enough structural support to retain them long-term — whether through workload balance, realistic demands, or competitive compensation. Ulimited PTO is the biggest perk but only if you feel comfortable taking it, knowing it'll be a real struggle to catch up when you return. Even with well-meaning colleagues who want to help, the bandwidth and availability isn't there.

Cons

Carnegie used to be a unicorn company. When leadership said “People First,” they truly meant it. I felt like I had finally found a place where I could thrive both professionally and personally. There were strong boundaries, real work-life balance, and a genuinely positive company culture. Over the past few years, following multiple acquisitions and unprecedented growth, the company has struggled to scale its culture alongside its size. Instead of evolving intentionally, the culture has shifted toward empty affirmations and a “we’re all drowning” mentality. Trauma bonding over working nights and weekends just to stay afloat is not healthy team building. Burnout has become normalized. What once felt supportive now often feels reactive and survival-based. The heart of what made this company special has slowly eroded.

Thank you for this incredibly candid feedback. It’s heartening to hear your praise for your colleagues, but deeply concerning to hear that Carnegie's growth has led to a culture of burnout and 'trauma bonding.' We clearly have work to do in ensuring our 'People First' mission scales alongside our business. We are taking your comments regarding workload, compensation, and the reality of taking PTO to heart as we refine our internal structures. We appreciate your honesty and please feel free to reach out to hr@carnegiehighered.com with additional comments or concerns.
