One of the worst professional experiences in my life.

Pros

Provides a great example of what to avoid professionally.

Cons

This is a toxic environment. Management and senior leadership contribute heavily to a culture of abandoning work/life balance (despite claims of the opposite) and gossiping about reports, clients, and colleagues behind closed doors. As others have reported in reviews, 10-12 hour workdays and catching up on extensively weekends are the norm. If you have an emergency or family issue, good luck. Systems are not in place to cover any level of absence due to high turnover, terrible morale, and lack of direction and leadership. For all of the sacrifices that employees make, compensation is a complete joke. You'll be offered more just about anywhere. And you can learn the same skills (and more) without the toxicity.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Carnegie, and I am sorry to hear that you feel that our managers and senior leadership lack the skills we believe is a crucial element of employee satisfaction. Carnegie has invested in ensuring our managers have the resources needed to support their team. Gossiping about colleagues, and clients is never okay, and if you would like to share additional feedback please contact me at hr@carnegiehighered.com Allison Letizi, VP Human Resources

Profit-First, People-Last

Pros

- Remote including some flexibility of working hours - Unlimited PTO and half-day summer Fridays (but given the workloads of the past year almost impossible to use these benefits) - Dedicated and hardworking peers

Cons

This company markets itself as a step up from higher education: better pay, better opportunities, better quality of life. In reality, it no longer delivers on any of those promises. What was once a people-centered organization has become relentlessly profit-driven, and employees are paying the price. The expectation is simple: produce more, take on more, and figure it out… regardless of whether the workload is sustainable. The company relies heavily on high achievers who care deeply about their work, their peers, and their clients. That dedication is not supported — it’s exploited. People stretch themselves thin to do right by others, often at the expense of their own well-being, because they know the alternative is letting teammates or clients down. Leadership seems comfortable with this dynamic, because the work continues to get done. Workloads consistently exceed what can reasonably be handled in a standard workweek, yet there is little effort to address capacity in a meaningful way. Employees are told to maintain balance, but are given no realistic path to do so. The result is widespread burnout. Compensation only adds to the frustration. Pay is below market, inequitable across teams, and far from the “upgrade” from higher education that is often promised during recruitment and hiring. Transparency is limited, and growth opportunities feel inconsistent at best. At the same time, the organization continues to sell and commit to work that delivery teams are not set up to execute effectively. This not only puts additional strain on employees, but also erodes client trust and makes it increasingly difficult to stand behind the work being done. Perhaps most concerning is the gap between messaging and reality. The company continues to position itself as “people-first,” but the lived experience for many employees tells a very different story.

Thank you for providing such a candid and deeply thoughtful review. We are glad to hear that you valued the flexibility of our remote environment and the dedication of your peers. However, it is incredibly difficult to read that your dedication—and the dedication of your coworkers—felt exploited rather than supported. You have highlighted several critical operational truths that our leadership team is taking very seriously. You are absolutely right: "unlimited PTO" and Summer Fridays are meaningless benefits if an unsustainable workload prevents you from actually unplugging. We are actively discussing your advice to management. Bridging the gap between our "people-first" messaging and the actual, lived experience of our employees is our top priority. We deeply regret that your experience resulted in burnout. Even though you have moved on, please know that your feedback is actively shaping our internal changes. If you are open to it, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you further at hr@carnegiehighered.com.

Pros

Great HR/People Success team genuinely dedicated to improving what they can for employee support. My specific division offers great flexibility.

Cons

The pressure from being bought by a private equity firm ruined the employee experience at this company. It used to be People First but it is fully Profit First at this point. A majority of the OG senior leaders have either left or been pushed out, leaving new to the industry, new to the company leaders who could not care less about the people working for them. They are all in this little club together making choices without context leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces. Oh, and pay is laughable. I've applied for roles much lower in scope than my current one that pay 25% more.

Thank you for providing such a candid and detailed assessment of your experience. First, we are incredibly glad to hear that you feel supported by our People Success team and that you value the flexibility within your division. Fostering a supportive environment at the ground level is very important to us, and we are proud of the HR team’s dedication to our employees. That being said, the rest of your review is difficult to read, and we deeply regret that recent organizational changes have negatively impacted your view of the company. We hear your frustrations regarding the cultural shift and the pressure that has come with our recent transitions. Blending new leadership with an established team is a complex process, and it is clear from your feedback that this integration has caused feelings of disconnect, alienation, and a loss of our core identity. Additionally, we hear your frustrations regarding compensation. We are continuously reviewing our pay bands against current market data to ensure that our salaries accurately reflect the scope and value of our team's hard work. Because you noted that you trust the People Success team, we strongly encourage you to reach out to us confidentially at hr@carnegiehighered.com. We genuinely want to bridge this gap and would value your perspective on how we can better advocate for you and your team moving forward.
