Racist Discriminatory Organization

Pros

You can wear jeans on Thursdays and Fridays and pay is ok.

Cons

Only white employees are promoted or in management positions. If you are non white they lie and tell you that you are not qualified or good enough to move up. The supervisors are racist and unqualified. Gays also cannot hold management positions unless they pretend to be straight.

Pros

Note: This is written from the perspective of a program manager who worked overseas in spite of location given as Baltimore, USA. CRS is a major organization in the international development and relief industry so it has many opportunities for work overseas especially in challenging environments. For those who can work in difficult conditions, CRS offers extensive opportunity. The benefits package and conditions for international staff living overseas are good. If you are comfortable working with a Catholic organization, believe in conventional international development and relief work, and want a long-term career in developing countries, CRS is a good option.

Cons

There is a tendancy to take on very large programs that are sometimes beyond the capacity of the organization to implement well. There is sometimes a conflict between CRS policies intended to promote good quality programming and pressures to execute projects that are donor driven (both public and private donors are at fault in this). Thus policies and practices in place are not followed fully in the field. Some environments are high-pressure and the workload is high, thus maintaining a good work-life balance is difficult. CRS frequently has difficulty staffing positions for highly technical work or in difficult environments thus staff who are in place have high work loads. As a large organization, CRS can be slow to innovate.

Pros

Lots of opportunities to try new skills and grow leadership abilities, if you fit the agency's profile. Job stability. Smart, collaborative, compassionate staff. Feels like family. Mid level mgmt has significantly improved and diversified in the past few years. Trying to place more sincere effort into local leadership. Plenty of $$$ for trying out new programming ideas-- this org has more flexible funding available for programming than most INGOs. Fair pay for US-based staff with excellent benefits, but a long way to go with equitable pay for non-US staff. Efforts made to address work/family balance during COVID.

Cons

Executive leadership aren't held accountable. Serious program quality issues as well as staff wellbeing are not being adequately addressed. DEI efforts are a sham. Executive leadership have poor communication and poor decision making that fails to align with prioritizing needs of most marginalized populations (per its Catholic mission) and loses the trust of staff. Career opportunities seem to be most easily accessible for those who are white and fit the "development worker" profile, and are unwilling to rock the boat. Not very progressive in how they manage people or resources.
