Pros

Good benefits, telecommuting options, appreciative upper management, respectful and fun environment, supportive colleagues, ongoing innovation, room for advancement, vendor choices based on value and not just cost (e.g., typesetters far above average quality)

Cons

Salaries are on the lower range of average

Pros

- flexible work hours - good benefits (free exercise programs, free subscriptions to health apps, option to enroll in coupon/discount programs, variety of health/vision/dental plans to choose from, retirement offered) - generous PTO policy, plus additional time off for volunteering, bereavement, etc. - good internal hospitality (lots of opportunities for socializing both virtually and in person, programs to help new hires get comfortable, variety of clubs/groups/message threads available that focus on everything from pet photos to the LGBTQIA+ community) - criticism is offered constructively - upper management within Cell Press tends to be receptive and understanding and makes an effort to know everyone by name

Cons

- low pay. Although the pay is considered competitive compared to other companies within the industry, the industry itself tends to offer low pay. - internal diversity initiatives are geared towards inviting marginalized groups into a privileged environment instead of dismantling the privilege to create a non-exclusionary environment. - high employee turnover rate - upper management within Cell Press's parent company often disregards criticism from employees

Overwork and Underpay

Business Outlook

Pros

Interact with great scientists and keep abreast of top research. Opportunities to travel. Nice, smart, driven, collaborative colleagues.

Cons

The company does not value the work of its Editors. Complete lack of recognition. Slow to no promotions. Overwork and underpay. Incompetent senior managing team. Very toxic management culture. Useless HR. Top management inherited from times when the company was doing very poorly (>20% of turnover). Instead of being replaced, managers stayed, were promoted, and continue to run the company as always.
