RIP the Culture

Pros

Initial salary (it won’t rise as time passes) Work from home (unless your manager requests you come in) Food Friendly coworkers

Cons

The company just had a large layoff of many smart accounting (finops) members made up mainly of managers. We lost an individual who embodied all our core values and you could tell that he was a natural-born leader who cared about all of us in his own right. Everybody in accounting loved him because he saw the best in everybody, asked questions on everybody’s behalf, and advocated for us. The Managers could have learned from him what it was like to be a true Leader instead of Managers. He was always good at teaching and sharing knowledge to help us grow. You could tell that he was at a higher tier in both smarts and EI than the remaining managers even if he was too humble to admit it.

Hot Mess! Incompetent leadership and toxic environment

Pros

Pay is good at higher levels of organization. Health benefits are good.

Cons

The CEO is extremely inexperienced, ego-driven and micromanages every aspect of the business. The c-staff enable this behavior and tend to overestimate their competence levels. Many people throughout the organization are aware of this dynamic and the resulting employee engagement levels are incredibly low. Employee attrition is off the charts, with people jumping ship at the earliest opportunity. The faux virtue signaling Checkr does to build an image of a benevolent company is a joke when you come to understand how toxic, political, and mismanaged the place is. From what I saw, I believe that to take the company public, the board will need to replace the CEO and c-staff. If you value your sanity and health, I recommend avoiding this place.

Good Mission, Bad Culture

Recommend

Pros

Wonderful mission, really committed to giving back. The company tries really hard to build culture through remote events for employees, which is nice. The product is innovative and helpful and easy to sell. The company is thoughtful about current events and provides assistance to employees who are affected by public tragedies.

Cons

Despite the attempts to build a positive culture, the mid-management level underscores the work by the larger company and creates a very negative culture. Managers yelling at you over Zoom, speaking negatively and demeaningly about you, disrespect in team meetings, and an unwillingness to help. There are some wonderful people here, but the churn rate is quite high, I would say because of the middle managers.

Thanks for the feedback and taking the time to write a review. Yelling at your team and creating unsafe environments is certainly not tolerated here. The People team always takes any complaint seriously, but if you're open to it - please reach out to me directly for more context. - Arthur / People and Talent
