Case Study in Dysfunction

Pros

Lots of smart people who deeply care about this mission.

Cons

The leadership team is dysfunctional. There is a lot of tension between Sales and Finance. The executives just don't get along and it trickles down to the teams. Daniel, the CEO is easily swayed by a couple of execs and is brutal to rank and file managers.

Thanks for taking the time to write some really tough feedback. There is always tension between sales and finance, which is natural. But as someone privy to meetings at the executive level - I can tell you that our C-level execs are very much starting to gel and I think Checkr will be better for it. We certainly have areas we can continue to improve but I'm excited to see how 2021 has started and will finish. I wish you luck in your new role and thank you for your contributions to Checkr. - Arthur / Recruiting

Pros

I am sorry but I have no positive comments for Checkr, except that I had a few nice colleagues.

Cons

Checkr is a company that does not value their employees and I can relate to those who have mentioned in previous reviews that HR is cold and unhelpful. I also find the executives and even down to the administrative team to be an unprofessional, egotistical and cliquish group. I was very sad to see other employees get let go due to not being a fit within weeks or even a few months, this is not right. Hiring and firing decisions are more personal than based on professional performance. Be very cautious because this can happen to anyone without any notice.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience here. I disagree that hiring/firing are personal, but I know that's hard to see when you're on the other side of it. We do believe in a high performance culture here, and we want to move quickly if the fit isn't right. But I know that we do our best to give people a softer landing, and our severance policies are better than most companies in tech. Wish you luck in your next role. - Arthur / Recruiting

Pros

Checkr is filled with wonderful employees that are smart, driven, and really inclusive. It's easy to connect and collaborate with most teammates. There are tons of support groups, diverse workforce, happy hours, and an incredible on boarding process. Everyone believes in the product and the impact it's having on the job market.

Cons

Unfortunately, these same values don't exist at the executive level. The CEO is immature, utterly egoistical, and carries himself as a Steve Jobs type. He is maniacal about the most useless things and seems to micromanage every facet of the business. This has led to a toxic work culture where people don't feel comfortable about speaking their mind even though transparency and connection are claimed values -- a common pattern. There is constant turnover from product and engineering with zero autonomy. I would be highly skeptical about joining the company if you belong to one of these groups. It's so grim that they've resorted to consultants to fill the hiring gaps. The roadmap is driven by sales and specifically by a few top accounts. This type of 'strategy' leads to minimal creativity and more of a services culture. You spend most of your time on something 'urgent' from a top account leading to constant context switching. Intuition drives decision making over empirical evidence -- this is obvious across most of management. They claim to be a data company, but fail to understand or know how to use it. It really is a shame. They have a great social mission, humble team, and beautiful offices. In the end, none of that really matters if the executives don't empower the rest of the team. It's the opposite of real leadership, but more like a dictatorship. Leading from behind doesn't exist. The people rewarded are those that are liked i.e. agreeable. Challenging the status quo is not welcome and executive perception is the real key to success. Specifically, perception to the CEO. The irony is that it's the opposite of the famous Jobs quote, "It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do”. Finally, they claim to practice 'flexible' PTO which is a new HR policy to bypass the standard unlimited PTO. Several colleagues have gotten flagged after HR sorts employees by time requested. This happens regularly. It's really bizarre behavior for the valley and just reconfirms the lack of trust and autonomy the founders have in the team. Let's repeat this -- zero trust, zero autonomy.

Appreciate the tough, critical feedback and sorry it didn't work out for you here at Checkr. I'll be sure to share the feedback with our estaff and Daniel. We're always improving and despite what you may have felt, many people sincerely enjoy the environment and culture, and many of us (me included) have always felt trust and autonomy. As for flexible PTO, it has nothing to do with trust/autonomy. We want to balance work/life balance with productivity and ownership. At a certain threshold of "excessive" PTO, it's just hard to really do your job well. We've always encouraged people to take time off, and always support people thru personal/medical issues. Again, appreciate your feedback and wish you luck going forward. - Arthur / Recruiting
