Pros
-Great colleagues, depending on which division you're in -Intellectually stimulating work, especially if you're interested in development -Robust HR department -- seems to create and take an interest in facilitating a transparent, ethical process in resolving disputes between employees and their supervisors (but this HR department notably has its hands tied when it comes to the abuse this company inflicts on its employees)
Cons
-Absolutely NO work/life balance -- zero, zilch, nada -- you'll work nights and weekends, and no one will applaud you for your work or show you appreciation. Chemonics will even expect you to work through an illness. It happened to me twice. -Pay isn't that competitive, especially since you're based in D.C. -There isn't a matching 401(k), only an employee-owned shares plan, and you don't qualify for enrollment until you've been there for a year -High turnover rate -- with a handful of longtime employees there for 10 to 20 years and most employees leaving after one or two years -The company seems to award annual bonuses only to its favorites or ladder-climbing employees -- not to those who deserve it for their amazing work and professionalism The worst thing I've seen while here: Chemonics asked a lower-level employee to travel with a day's notice -- let me repeat that, a day's notice -- to a country in Central Asia for a week. Although Chemonics paid for this employee's airfare, it did not provide an advance or per diem, and this employee had to charge their credit card. When Chemonics paid back this employee, it did not cover the interest this individual accrued, and it took weeks, in any case.
