Pros

Prestige brand. Not many companies can claim to have been one of the two best companies at what it does for over 240 years. Great working environment and great people in general. Good work/life balance, especially considering the norm in New York. Opportunities to see incredible art (although, anyone can come to the viewings).

Cons

It is a top heavy and fragmented company -- because of this, decision-making is excruciatingly slow and advancement opportunities are very rare. In recent years, senior management has become increasingly less transparent. Because of the prestige brand, salaries are EXTREMELY low. The company had to create a new category of "staff" because more than the legal maximum number of unpaid interns allowed were used at the company. Even for full time staff, annual salary increases that are supposedly performance based (I've been rated highly every year) barely keep up with inflation, so, the longer you stay, the more your quality of life will suffer -- salary adjustments are extremely rare. These combine to create high turnover and lack of job satisfaction.

Pros

Company title on my resume is the only positive other than that nothing

Cons

Workplace bullying If you are not white you will fail and be treated like trash, I have personally witnessed this Bad behaviour and is the normal practice Talented individuals are forced out at the expense of retaining a few problematic white men Little accountability for mistreatment. Backstabbing abound HR turns a blind eye Too many middle managers, needless positions and jobs for friends that are conjured up by senior management Opportunities for growth or any form of promotion does not exist if you are an ethnic Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is just another buzz word used in the corporate world to cover deeper issues, lets be honest Christie's non white employees are nothing more than house slaves Christie's we know there is divide in race so let's not pretend there isn't. Look forward to one of your apprentices replying back to this

We note your job title, which would suggest you are employed by a third party contractor to Christie’s due to the structure of our IT function. That said, whilst you do not work for Christie’s directly, it still concerns us to see your feedback. Christie’s have an Global Respect and Inclusion Policy and we do not tolerate Workplace bullying or racism, which applies to both our staff and third party contractors. I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with your comments regarding ED&I as someone personally and heavily involved in our efforts, the art world has structural issues in relation to diversity that will take a long time to solve for, but . Alongside our respect at work policies we are committed to a number of the actions and initiatives required to achieve our goals in such which include as; -Establishing the Christie’s fund to invest in initiatives to increase diversity across the art world -Hiring interns from the Change100 programme led by Leonard Cheshire -Partnering with Art History Link-Up to expand the reach of studying Art History -Expanding our apprenticeship programme – we are looking to hire 35+ this year (up from 21 in 2021) -Paying our junior staff and interns an fair wage to attract the broadest range of talent We believe the above, and all our wider initiatives, are concrete actions to try and affect change and positive progress. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss on tmonk@christies.com (Toby Monk, Global Recruiting Director). The HR Team and I are here to listen and respond as appropriate.

Pros

Benefits! Vacation time! Mentoring programs, social gatherings, etc. The company culture is built to welcome newcomers, managers are well trained and the general atmosphere is conducive to someone who wants to learn and share in the joy of working with fine art. Relationships are easy to cultivate with likeminded people, you will find people from all over the world with fascinating backgrounds at this company. You will learn about more than just art, you’ll learn about life too. As far as training for the position you are in, the company is excellent. You will have little getting in your way of understanding both company structure and your role within it. The goals are clear and you’re encouraged to constantly grow and improve your skill set.

Cons

High degree of nepotism - the most successful people come from very wealthy backgrounds and hold the most powerful positions. Racism, elitism, classism - all these things exist within the company culture. Low pay - young people who come from the working class will have to fight harder for better and sometimes, even then, you are mistreated or overworked. Competition - you must have a high degree of self awareness and aptitude for knowing how you’re perceived.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are really pleased to hear that you found the company culture welcoming and that you had the opportunity to learn more about working with fine art. We are happy to hear that you had a good benefits and vacation time as we aim to provide a competitive total compensation package. Christie’s significantly invests in learning and development as a business, including rolling out a number of new training opportunities and methodologies. So far we have received positive feedback on all these new initiatives. We recognise that the art industry is not as diverse as it should be but we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that young people have the opportunity to participate; examples of this is our partnership with charity Art History Linkup and the Futures and Options charity. We are a global company, it is our aim that our workforce reflects our global makeup and we have a zero tolerance policy on racism. We are working hard to ensure that our ethnic diversity is also reflective of broader society. Our Diversity and Inclusion Committee is committed to achieving this objective and we continue to educate our employees by offering workshops an example of this is bystander training and allyship.
