Pros

Work across the street from the auction house.

Cons

A lot of turnover at Collectrium due to inept management who has no idea how to do their jobs. They also do not have any knowledge of the art world whatsoever. Human Resources at Christie's is no help whatsoever, though I believe new hires come through them. Be wary of the job description if you apply and ask someone who works there what they do day to day before coming onboard. I was hired to catalogue objects in clients' homes but the reality is that I was working with spreadsheets and taking computer support calls. The Collectrium product itself constantly breaks down and disappoints clients so be prepared to handle a lot of frustrated people. Stay away and wait for something better because this is not the art job that you are looking for.

Pros

It is a wonderful place to learn about art, and to see firsthand so many masterpieces in the world. A great place to learn about the auction industry.

Cons

"A salary of $58,450 or less annually is now considered low income in the New York Metro Area. If you are a single New Yorker earning $58,450 or less per year, you fall under the low income category, according to 2018 estimates released last month by the U.S. Department of Housing (HUD)" I cannot speak for executive level colleagues, but this is pretty insulting to many of us who have worked so hard to obtain univeristy/masters/some PhD degrees. Living in NY with a Christie's salary definitely requires 1) multiple roommates 2) mental preperation that you will have debt 3) parents helping you out 4) trust fund 5) marry rich. Christie's, I'd be curious to hear a response that is beyond "our salaries match the industry". Would the company ever provide subsized housing for employees? Allowance to purchase work clothes? (it's not like we can be sloppy during an auction)? Please enlighten us. Or maybe this is just a way the art industry "cleanse out" certain people

Thank you for your feedback, please note we do take it very seriously. The Compensation package at Christie’s not only includes a base salary a highly generous employee benefits package as well as significant paid time off and other work life balance benefits. We work diligently with our junior staff to equip them for growth and mobility in the organization. This affords employees an upward trajectory through development opportunities and mentorship from the best art experts. If you would like to speak further about your concerns, please reach out to any member of the HR team and we would be happy to talk at any time.

Pros

Talented and hardworking individuals abound, especially at lower and mid levels. Access to highest levels of art in all categories, bringing you face to face with some of the best works of art ever made. A true privilege for art lovers.

Cons

The company has a tendency to femmwash the egregious behavior of white men by tokenizing a few women in high positions. The level of misogyny--particularly on behalf of high ranking men--is alarming. Upper Management has a very high tolerance for bad behavior and is willing to continuously sacrifice younger, talented individuals at the expense of retaining a few problematic men who have become adept at managing up. Little accountability for mistreatment. Backstabbing abound. HR is largely asleep. Few opportunities for growth or change.
