Pros

- Great Talent - Empathetic Employees - Cozy Office - Work / Life Balance

Cons

- Very unorganized upper management/executives who do not take or show accountability for their actions. - Company is confused about their identity, chasing their own tail, and this greatly affects / creates unproductive workflow. - The inability, while also having a disinterest, in growing their employees. - Rarely people receive raises or bonuses (outside of the very small profit sharing), otherwise, you have to be promoted, which can take many years.

We appreciate feedback, particularly when it's constructive and based on actual experience. Regarding the advice to management, I want to address the salary question. In January 2020, we established what may have been the highest minimum salary in our industry for our entry-level employees. In fact, we have seen many other publishers making announcements this year about updates to their starting wages, and we have been pleased to see that we continue to lead in this area. As for raises and bonuses, we have an annual cost of living adjustment every year of approximately 3%, employees tend to promote every 18-24 months in their first three professional levels at the company, and our profit-sharing plan has consistently paid an annual bonus of approximately 10% (or more) of one's annual salary as a bonus. It's possible this former employee's experience did not reflect this due to their short tenure or their misaligned expectations relative to our developmental paths and organizational structure. As for accountability at all levels, we have an autonomous culture that is simultaneously highly collaborative. It's a delicate but integral balance, and it's how we work best. Chronicle Books is a community of smart, creative, passionate, and dedicated individuals without whom none of our success would be possible. It demands accountability and trust at all levels, and we think our culture's success is reflected not only in our amazing publishing but is also evident in the careers people have built at Chronicle where our average employee tenure which is over 7 years.
