Pros

Job security. They tend not let go of many employees. Also, the industries CPI is involved with (energy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and industrial products) are lucrative. The company is innovative in the fact that they develop and use an innovative technology to make the products they do.

Cons

If you want to have a future at this company, be part of the family that runs it. The best thing to do to get a promotion is have the last name or marry into the family. I have seen many instances when qualified employees have been passed over for promotion for a member of the family, and this was not to the company's benefit. Granted, I have only worked at the company's Sauk City location, but I feel this is true of the Verona location as well. The company is poorly managed and stays afloat mostly due to the profitability of the industries it is involved with and the fact that not many other companies do what they do. At the Sauk City facility, the production management generally shows up late and leaves early, leaving employees with little to do until they issue them new instructions. Morale amongst the lower level employees is poor. One incident that comes to mind was when a truck driver who had come to pick up a load was called a racist word by a manager. I've also seen the company abuse the college students they hire as interns by basically forcing them to work in the production line while getting paid less than full time employees and not providing them with any sort of technical, career or professional education.

Best for internships, not careers.

Pros

Good place to intern during college, but it is to your benefit to accept an offer elsewhere when you graduate.

Cons

Many of the staff members (and a portion of management) are related. Since there are less than 200 employees, the family portion of the business is the only part that matters. There are occasional outside hires (one of the 2 QC managers) brought in for company improvement. This particular manager has NO idea what she's doing, and as a result, her half of the QC department is managed terribly. The QA department has strong family presence, but the work does not seem to be spread out fairly amongst the QA employees. There are only 3 IT employees, and one of them has the most unprofessional, offensive behavior that I've ever witnessed in a workplace. The IT manager is excellent, but the documentation system is still paper based. The production staff are underpaid and there are no rewards for good performance. The formulations team does not communicate important information between clients and scientists. Compared to nearby competitors (PPD, Covance, SAFC, etc), this company is not a good place to work.
