Great company to start your career

Pros

Family is important. Very flexible with PTO and days off. Really do feel like corporate and the local managers care about you and work-life balance. Branches are opening up all over the U.S.A. Each branch has its own distinct culture and autonomy. Deep support within the company to help with projects. There is always an expert about something somewhere. 5% 401K match. Got smart folks in every department, easy to find an answer to cross-discipline issues. Principals are given part ownership of the company, until retiring at a certain age. Great way to keep the big wigs invested in the growth of the company and its revenue. Profit sharing!

Cons

Company is expanding quickly and getting big. Individual impact in the grand scheme of things seem minimal. Not too many young engineers being hired, managers are always on the lookout to hire experienced professionals. The young engineers that are hired tend to not stay long for some reason. 8.5 days of holidays during the year...my old job had 18 days so maybe I am biased. Starting pay was not very competitive...but raises are there if you work for it. Healthcare plans not that great for the family (very high premium). Only 1 yearly review.

Lots of great input, but a lot to unpack. We are expanding quickly, but I want to make sure that people have the right context for that growth. It is not a top-down push for growth, it is organically driven by forward thinking and entrepreneurial general managers. So it feels fast (and it is), but it is grass roots growth which makes it way more sustainable. The tenure of young engineers is cause for concern. If you have any thoughts about how to retain new grads, would you please contact your general manager or myself. We would love to hear your ideas. Can't even hope to address your 18 days of holiday. Wow. High deductible health care plans with health savings accounts are our reality, but we have taken the step to self-insure so we aren't beholden to the provider's premium increases that are often seemingly disconnected from our claim experience. This risk taken on by Coffman has rewards that are passed through. Finally, our Check-in process does allow for two check-ins per year. Talk to your department manager about increasing the frequency. Pros

Coffman is a great place to work, they really value their employees and value how important family is as well.

Cons

I do not have anything bad to say about Coffman. My commute is the worst part of my day, but Coffman is worth the commute.

A Company that Appreciates Everyone

Pros

I've had the opportunity to work at three separate engineering firms and I can safely say that Coffman Engineers has been the most enjoyable. From day one, everyone has been extremely welcoming and had the attitude "how can I help you succeed". Corporate staff is lean but it is not noticeable. Whether it's an IT issue, HR or expense report issue, a responses is always timely. Coffman Engineers provides the freedom to thrive and the support to excel.

Cons

The structure of the company is set up for office autonomy. Internally this is both a pro and con. The con is that there are times where offices need to come together to better serve the clients and that is easier said than done. This is known by management and they are implementing initiatives to streamline the process.

You emphasized a couple of my main drivers! Freedom and autonomy. Top down command and control is for those organizations that lack the courage to set people free and manage the outliers. But my experience tells me, hire great, respectful, whole people; create a healthy environment, and then set them free. In this environment, people will always blow your doors off with excellence and creativity. And that's not even the best part. It's what people are longing for and what they deserve. We are continually working on the cross-office work sharing. We can do better. It has to be ingrained in us to treat other offices as our best client. We are working on it. Thanks so much for the feedback. Don't you go changin'! Dave Ruff - CEO/President
