      Mind numbingly bureaucratic with insular senior management over their heads

      Pros

      There are a few excellent people trying to do good work in support of the mission, in spite of a poisonous culture.

      Cons

      Senior leadership is arrogant, narcissistic and deaf to any constructive criticism or ideas. Overly concerned with rhetoric and image, instead of real progress and work. A great deal of dead wood and failing up, limits the potential for advancement and career paths for even the most talented staffers. Too much back stabbing and a frightening lack of transparency. HR plays favorites and does not protect or support employees.

      Pros

      Great benefits. Great mission. Great brand reputation and national platform. Some very intelligent and passionate people scattered throughout the organization.

      Cons

      Senior leadership egos, politics, and lack of leadership capabilities. Operating as individuals, rather than a cohesive team. Lip service, dragging feet, self-importance. Bureaucracy is stifling. No real decisions, goals, metrics, or accountability. No results, little impact, no innovation.

      A Good Place to Work

      Pros

      If you're interested in helping to influence the state of education nationally this is a very good place to work. Great benefits; flexible time but a lot of work expected of you, which I find is a good thing. Compensation is very good and comparable to other leading industries.

      Cons

      This organization is very hierarchical in structure. It's hard to move up the ladder. A little bit closed to innovation and at times follows the national trend rather than leading it.
