A Good, Unambitious Corporate Job

Pros

Very stable, very family friendly, the pace was usually relaxed, people were very friendly and usually helpful. Benefits were towards the top of industry standard, generally professional attitudes, very few issues with ego or dysfunctional personalities.

Cons

Very slow moving and bureaucratic, leadership was overly cautious and out of date, strong internal resistance to using "modern" web technology. Pay was below industry average for developers, most projects were delivered late with cut back functionality, and the company was mostly wedded to outdated management practices.

Pros

Very stable environment, a good place to either get started or close out your career. Lots of interesting different projects to work on. Pay and benefits are good, they used to have very good vacation and 401k contributions (not sure if those are still the same).

Cons

Not much hope of advancement since the senior people are well entrenched and there are plenty of cliques. They used to be very religious about Java and Oracle, not sure if that's still the case. Very process-heavy most of the projects are maintenance. Very few of the devs get to work on anything new and exciting, typically those in the inner-circle.

The benefits--IF you can make it past 6 mos

Old-fashioned technology; incompetent upper mgt that avoids answering questions so as not to be found out as incompetent; uber-corporate environment but one from 1989; android-like, super inflated ego types; database hacks; unfriendly. This place was a shocker--it is retro but in a very negative way. They use Dells and Blackberries! Are averse to change, and are always "too busy" to do any real work. Very low morale, a humorless, joyless place. And I think it is restricted...HR is a caricature of itself...
