Pros

Good mission, great sponsor, kids are amazing...In spite of the way ministry treats employees- Kids are being blessed each day.

Cons

Top down leadership. If you have an idea and you aren't blessed enough to be a manager- just keep it to yourself- NO one will ever listen to you. Gallup Polls are a joke- they do not listen to results & have no intentions of changing culture. 7 of 10 on my team have left since January 2016 and for whatever reason they don't think there is a problem. This is due to micromanagement, poor leadership, lack of trust, strict rules (log into computer to let management know you are going to the bathroom). Wow...maybe I could just raise my hand and ask permission- Don't get me wrong- I love this mission, love the kids I sponsor- but until there are massive leadership changes (and I mean massive) I want nothing more to do w/ this organization. No I didn't cancel my kids...will I sponsor a new child as mine leave the program- no way. Do I think that HR will read this review and make changes, or respond- nope. Do I hope applicants will consider what they are walking into- I hope and pray.

Pros

They do a very good job of helping children in poverty, along with their families. Sponsors also have the opportunity to give family gifts and then see pictures of how you're helped them, which is very rewarding. Their approach is unique and helps kids and their families get back on their feet, live instead of just surviving, and equip them with a fighting chance at real success in life and in Christ - you're not just throwing money at them. Compassion brings many children and families to Christ, and also helps any children from any religious background, which is great. Sponsors have a real, tangible relationship with the kids and it's very rewarding (please note there are many safeguards in place for the kids in case of dubious sponsors). I will absolutely continue to sponsor children from there. Other pros: Weekly Chapel. They also had wonderful, inspirational speakers during chapel. It was also a blessing to be able to pray out loud at will, before meals, and with and for your team. The compensation is above any other ministry I applied for. They were fair in the severance packages when they had to lay off 5% of the company due to upper mgmt.'s incompetence.

Cons

Everything else. I'm a Christian and thought I would love working with other Christians, but overall I found the culture bizarre, although I heard from my co-workers at the time it's better than the culture at most ministries. If you are someone who wants to get work done in an efficient, timely way, this place will drive you crazy. The upper mgmt. were/are all mostly "Good 'ole boys", and completely out of touch with the rest of the worker bees, not to to mention they grossly mismanaged their $, caused an unprecedented 5% lay off, while not one of them were laid off themselves. All the CEO does is cry. I was totally turned off to working with Christians and will never work in a ministry again because it wasn't for me, but it was a great learning experience even if it wasn't the right fit.

Pros

Good benefits. The hourly employees are a great community environment. The pay is not the best but not the worst. I would call it borderline fair. The mission of Compassion is noble.

Cons

The mission of Compassion is great, the benefits they offer are great, the pay is so-so but not awful. But the company is riddled with issues. Issues that stem from corrupt management teams. Leadership holds hourlies to a higher standard than they hold themselves and hypocrisy is rampant. I worked in a department where the work in and of itself was rewarding, but management consistently broke their own rules; IE- Discussing inter-departmental-issues with a co-worker in the same department, who was directly involved with and had first hand knowledge of said issues, was a MAJOR no no and was deemed "gossip". But as long as you were management, it was open season on anybody and everybody as far as discussing not just departmental issues, but issues of a personal nature with people they did not like. A big part of this double standard and culture of extreme arrogance amongst management I believe stemmed from them considering themselves to have been personally blessed by Jesus himself to be raised to a position of authority. This caused an attitude of "Do as I say; not as I do", that could NOT be addressed by a subordinate. Dissent was rendered ABSOLUTELY intolerable. They consistently used fear tactics to maintain the façade of a happy, kumbaya, Compassion International. If you had a problem, it was nobody's fault but your own. The Gallup survey, for example, was directly manipulated by management. When my department gave a low rating my team was pulled into a conference room and basically told why we were wrong and essentially the low ratings were our fault; not their's. We were passively reprimanded and told that the next Gallup survey should have improved answers and if not, "Compassion isn't the company for you". By far and large the management culture of Compassion will be their undoing. Which is a shame as so many genuine and passionate people work there but through scare tactics are rendered helpless to shed any light on major issues for fear of their livelihood. It is better to show up, stay under the radar, put on a face and act the way they want you to, and collect your paycheck. I would not recommend working for Compassion to anybody.
