Pros

Competitive vacation package. Non-management coworkers are an amazing group of individuals. I can't think of anything else.

Cons

This is a deceitful company that does not care about the work-life balance of anyone not at a manager level or higher. Somebody has to work to support 26 executives, am I right? Look at other large companies and see how many executives they need to run a successful company (I.e. DTE with 11). CE has restructured all job families, and now you cannot receive a promotion unless a job opens up and you successfully interview for that job. The only employees who have a progressive path forward are union, and if the company could figure out a way to break the contract, the union employees would lose that progression too. In '21 the company offered up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, which was phenomenal. In '24, they took it away. The pay is somewhat mediocre compared to other utilities in the state. People were hired in as remote employees during '20-'22, and employees were allowed by management to move out of state and work remote. Then, in '23, these same employees were told to come into the office or they could seek employment elsewhere. The buyouts happened in '23 too, and this resulted in single contributors taking on the workload of those that left instead of any reduction in the workload itself. It is written in the corporate policy that all salaried personnel have no minimum work hours... so CE can double your workload and demand that you finish it or face consequences. That's why your job description will have some generic statement about how you may be asked to perform other job duties whether they're non-essential or necessary. Keep your expectations low for additional compensation for all of your hard work because the company believes that you should be grateful for 1% of your yearly salary as a bonus at the end of the year.

Pros

Talented and Dedicated Colleagues: It is impossible to overstate the quality of the people working here. My colleagues were some of the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and supportive individuals I've ever had the pleasure to work alongside. They were not only incredibly talented but also genuinely kind and helpful, creating a strong sense of camaraderie among the ranks.

Cons

In the spirit of transparency, I feel it's necessary to share my experience during the numerous years I spent at Consumers Energy. For those considering launching or continuing their careers here, I urge you to consider the following. Let me be clear: there are genuinely wonderful people at Consumers Energy, but I found that the organization as a whole suffers from deep-rooted leadership issues that make it a challenging environment to thrive in. For a long time, my performance reviews at Consumers Energy were outstanding. I was consistently recognized for my dedication, hard work, and achievements, so this isn't a disgruntled review from a low-performing ex-employee. However, over time, I began to notice a subtle but very real shift in the organizational culture. Leadership, a term I use lightly here, started becoming less about guidance, motivation, and inspiration, and more about belittling and deception. Open communication was replaced by smoke and mirrors, with leaders hiding behind a façade of false narratives and misinformation. It wasn't long before the damage from this eroding trust started showing in the morale and productivity of the team. No matter how adept or resilient one may be, working in a culture where you feel continuously belittled and misled by those in power is nothing short of demoralizing. The leadership's failure to nurture a healthy and honest environment ultimately bred a toxic culture that pervaded almost every facet of the organization. The stark lack of empathy, understanding, and support from the leadership was another concern. Despite being a provider of critical services to millions, there seemed to be a fundamental disconnect within Consumers Energy when it came to looking after their own people. The feeling of being just another expendable cog in the machine can be overwhelming and counterproductive, often leading to burnout and disillusionment. Over time, I noticed that many employees, including myself, became disenchanted with the increasingly hostile and unappreciative work environment. This, I believe, has significant implications for the company's long-term sustainability and growth. Skilled and experienced personnel may choose to depart, leading to a drain of critical expertise and institutional knowledge. I find it difficult to recommend Consumers Energy as a prospective place of employment unless significant changes are made. The current state of affairs is untenable for anyone looking for a fulfilling and rewarding career. If you are considering a role here, I implore you to think long and hard about whether this is the kind of culture you wish to be a part of. In summary, the exceptional people who make up the workforce at Consumers Energy deserve a leadership that values and nurtures them, rather than fosters a culture of negativity and distrust. Unfortunately, from my experience, I can only advise potential candidates to look elsewhere for opportunities, where their talents can be genuinely appreciated, and their career can flourish without undue stress. As for me, I can firmly say I won't be looking back.

Pros

Benefits were good. Healthcare, 401k and paid time off

Cons

There has never been a company with worse politics than this one. Your hard work goes unappreciative. If you're related to someone or you get in with someone in a position of power, you will go far very fast no matter how many mistakes you make. On the other hand, if you do a good job to the point of being a top performer year over year, get ready to be taken advantage of. You will see minimal raises and a lot of thankless hours.
