Pros

Parental leave- 4 months for fathers, nearly 6 months for birthing mothers.

Cons

I’ve worked at this company for 6 years now, the longest I’ve ever been at a company. I’ve worked in different areas of the company. The quality of your direct supervisor varies widely. It’s an honest gamble if you’re getting a good manager or not. I’ve seen managers who should have been fired for harassment, but still work here, even after they were reported. Garrick, the current CEO is running the company into the ground. I miss Patti, our old CEO every single day. Retiring all of our coal plants and replacing with renewables is extremely risky. Especially in such a short time frame. And pushing customers to use less energy. Garrick’s clearly a do as I say or else kinda guy. As others have said, everyone was forced to return to the office or leave. After previously being told we could stay working from home after the pandemic, or that we could move out of state , and many out of state folks were hired during the pandemic. It’s a mess right now, as many people are leaving, and there’s no plan on what to do about the work they used to do. But you can bet those who remain will have to shoulder the weight of the work everyone who left has to do. And the utter disregard for how this has impacted the employees is shameful. The company-wide Teams call when the return to office mandate happened was the most tone deaf joke of a conversation I’ve ever seen. These are real people’s lives they’re messing with. People with families. The company has truly showed its cards-people are expendable. I also echo the other reviews about the uselessness of HR. Or People and Culture as they are now known. The pay increase freeze, and job reclassifications with no pay adjustment is a joke. People get title changes with no compensation change. As long as Garrick is at the helm, I honestly would not apply here. It’s a darn shame too. All the work Patti did to build the culture up is gone. It used to be a great place to work

Pros

Most co-workers are amazing people and great to work with.

Cons

In less than 3 years, the CEO has taken this company from an ideal employer to one that should be avoided. Executive leadership claims to care about employee empowerment and wellbeing, but their actions do not match their words. Promises were made that employees took on good faith, making life decisions, that are now being reverted. There are currently hard line policies being implemented designed to cause a mass exodus. When it comes down to employee wellbeing or shareholder profit (which translates into heavy executive bonuses), the shareholder profit will win every time.

Pros

It's a stable, healthy company. The people are pretty nice, good to work with. Up and coming Officers are solid (including IT department which is now under good management). There are a good amount of lazy people though so being a "high performer" means you get work piled onto you. Work enjoyment and soft perks (like telecommuting) are really based on VP area.

Cons

HR actively sabotages talent. A job is posted at a certain salary, and if you're an internal candidate they will give you a 3-5% raise in lieu of the extra salary - and yet expect you to perform the full duties of the position. I've witnessed this dozens of times and I'm not even privy to that information. It definitely takes a hit on morale because it is talked about. Why do you have faith in someone to do a job but won't back it up? "Hey you're getting $40k and we're hiring you for a $70k job. You need to perform all the duties of the job, but we're going to pay you $44k. And you should thank us." That policy makes no sense and happens all the time -- and I'm not exaggerating the numbers. I believe this is because they think you have no other recourse: they're the only major employer in Jackson. I know people the same age with similar background where one gets paid literally twice the other because one was an external hire and the other an internal promotion. For you external candidates, the magic salary grade is 19 (approximately $109-$119k). If you make above that your annual bonus is 5 digits. If you make below that it is 3 digits. Yes, 3. CEO John Russell's response is "if you're not happy then get the hell out of here." Rather than fix things he just thinks anyone who raises their hand is a bad apple. In short: if you're coming from the outside, jump at it. Good company. But don't plan on living out your career here if you're wanting to increase earnings. It's a shame to let all those relationships people build go to waste, but it's well known that peer company DTE pays better for the same jobs.
