Pros

Consumers Energy has a very diverse workforce with varied backgrounds and extensive knowledge. Most employees are friendly and most are very helpful if asked. New employees are provided a good amount of support. Our company is strengthening its values currently as we undergo major transformations in technology and as an aging workforce is exiting. Among some of these values include a top priority of safety which is excellent for new employees, but hindersome for some older employees. We provide power to our customers and therefore another top priority is reliability. This means that employees are not treated negatively if they are not comfortable performing work that they are not familiar with. The best reasons to work for Consumers Energy are the friendly people, flexible schedules (vacation time), competetive benefits, and job stability.

Cons

Consumers Energy is a large company. This prevents one from getting to know most employees and learning whom to contact for needed help at times. In certain job functions of the company you will work in any weather. Blistering sun, thunderstorms, freezing rain, and Michigan winters are not uncommon. One of the upsides to our company is that we value safety, but one of the downsides of our company is that we value safety. In certain job functions we wear protective clothing that includes full body suits and hoods while working next to 120 degree boiler walls. We now use protective devices that often hinders the ability to perform work and at times increases the possiblity of an accident actually occuring. Another downside is that like many companies it is not always what you know, but who you know.

Pros

Best pay & benifits available in all of Jackson. This company still offers a 401(k) _and_ a pension. Very stable company with minor reorgs every 2 or 3 years. Lots of people who have been at the company 30+ years. Once you get into the company, you don't want to leave! It's very common for people to work to get their spouse working there too.

Cons

Limited ability to get bonuses. Rare advancment outside of moving into managment positions. Large company with lots of paperwork, and endless layers of managers. If you don't have an enginering degree, you are very limited as to how far in the company you can climb. Pay is based on pay grades- which are fixed for each job title. Once you're in a job, don't expect more than cost of living raises - regardless of how hard you work.
