Pros

Extremely friendly Rapid progression for high achievers Interesting work helping get innovative new treatments to market Client and project based work ensures variety and change Independently owned, debt free business gives a focus on the long term not chasing short term financial tick boxes

Cons

Intrinsic to nature of the work we do is that deadlines (often set by bodies external to our clients) may be tight and it will be necessary to work longer on occasions; however workload is closely monitored and the work itself is worth doing so I do not find this a problem as less intense times balance it out providing a natural rhythm

Thank you for your review; it is brilliant to hear about the many elements of work that you enjoy. Your suggestion about the company pension scheme has been noted and we will consider this as part of our benefits roadmap. If you have any more detail to provide on the feedback above, we would encourage you to reach out to the People team.

Pros

Nice offices. Junior staff are mostly lovely.

Cons

The micromanagement on junior staff if ridiculous. There is no trust, which means junior staff don’t learn to have initiative, or lead for themselves. I didn’t realise until I moved to another agency where I am given an incredible amount of trust, and really praised for my work. At Costello, you will be pulled up on the tiniest things you do in your work that don’t fit their style. Whilst working there I actually broke out in a rash on my face as the stress they were causing me (over very minor things) was ridiculous. The senior staff are actually themselves very junior, and have only a couple of years experience, and mostly have never worked at another agency. They sell this as a pro to you as they hire from the bottom up, but in reality it does not work, as the people doing the managing don’t really know how to do this properly. The way client work is dealt with is incredible stressful. They put so much pressure on staff to meet client deadlines, even when these are ridiculously tight, and hardly ever explain to clients why deadlines can’t be met. I’d assumed this was normal, coming fresh from uni, but working at another agency I now see that most clients are very understanding when something can’t be completed within their ambitious timelines. Whilst working there, I knew of several interns (who in theory, should never have to feel stressed), who felt overworked, micromanaged and severely underpaid considering the extra hours they had to work to meet unrealistic expectations of them. I think a lot of the staff do not realise that their work culture is actually very toxic, as they’ve not had the experience of life at other agencies, and therefore vote highly in company surveys.

I am sorry to hear that you felt as though you were micromanaged at Costello Medical; it is an area we can look into, although our recent surveys suggest that satisfaction in this area is generally good – 84% of respondents in our annual Employee Survey were strongly satisfied or satisfied with their levels of autonomy in 2022, whilst 14% were somewhat satisfied. We do acknowledge that our newer joiners experience a greater level of guidance and oversight at first whilst they learn more about our projects; however, once an individual has proven themselves, we increasingly provide more responsibility and are delighted when individuals are enthusiastic and proactive about finding ways to take this on. Many colleagues have chosen to progress quickly at the company into more senior roles, which of course involve significantly increased autonomy. We are currently advertising externally for some senior as well as entry-level roles in our scientific teams, and we’ve previously appointed individuals to certain Operations roles (e.g. Head of Finance; Head of Legal) who have extensive prior experience at other organisations. However, generally we’re proud of our philosophy and long history of promoting internally and giving the vast majority of opportunities to those already within the company who show potential. We believe in the people we recruit at entry level, we want to support them in building their careers here with us, and this is unlikely to change in future. Feedback from our last employee survey in 2022 shows that over 92% of individuals trust in the senior management team to lead the company to future success. While we’re sorry you weren’t satisfied with this during your time at Costello Medical, and please be assured that we take your less positive experience seriously, hopefully these data are reassuring to you. One of our key values is quality, and our high quality work is one of the reasons that our clients return to us. Feedback to our colleagues is therefore a key part of this, and in turn supports our colleagues’ development in their current roles and beyond. We by no means expect a brand new joiner to do everything perfectly from the onset, and we have many support measures in place, as well as a comprehensive training programme, to ensure that colleagues are given the support and opportunities required to develop. We are sorry again to hear that your experience at the company was less positive, but thank you again for taking the time to leave your review.
