Nepotism and lack of professionalism

Pros

Good company to gain experience on how a company should not be run. A chance to learn about process failures, management shortcomings, and favoritism, and use this to compare with future employers.

Cons

If you're related to senior management, you have a career for life. If you're related to senior management, you're allowed to be unprofessional, condescending, arrogant and bombastic. HR is a paper dept that holds no water. You can't fault them, because there's a lot of integrity there, however, when issues are brought up to VPs, it falls on deaf ears. The humiliation of employees (belittling and yelling on the floor), the unprofessionalism of management (displaying badges of fired employees like a trophy case), and the total blindness and disregard of senior management to allow, promote, and reward these actions are an HR nightmare.

Dear Anonymous, My name is Dan Evans, I like to start there because everyone has a name and everyone should feel comfortable expressing his/her beliefs and feelings. I write this message to anyone that has an issue or problem at Cowan as someone that can and will enact change when necessary. Our people made us one of the most successful Transportation and Logistics companies in the world and our people will continue to drive our success. I have recently taken over the HR responsibilities in the organization and offer anyone that has a question or complaint about Cowan my name and my word that they have a voice and place to air any grievance. Cowan is a place where we hold each other accountable and I welcome any opportunity to improve our organization.

Pros

Most of the workers are nice, hard work is noticed (sometimes/depends who you are), the pay was good (for me), hours were flexible, actual job was not a problem.

Cons

Favoritsm is very apparent. Unworthy people are promoted to managerial positions. These "managers" are awful to other coworkers and make mistakes constantly yet get rewarded/promoted. Another example of favoritism: one person would get in trouble for clothing but another person wearing the same outfit is fine due to who they were in relation to the company. Basically it felt like you needed to be in the "clique" in order to move up. I was constantly praised for my hard work yet other people were rewarded (other people that are the center of many complaints). High turnover rate is another con, but these pretty much go hand in hand.

Pros

Had a brand new Pete.

Cons

Bottom of the pit Dispatching. Corp folks in Baltimore may have completed the 5th grade. The job was tolerable until Company lost Coca Cola accounts in PA & NY to Werner. The "local" position became running like a sleeper driver with a 10 hour break every night. The reviews on their insurance plan is true. Junk. No sick days, no personal days. Gotta work a whole year to get 5 days vacation. If you last that long, make sure you use vacation before you quit because they won't pay you for it after you leave. Never worked for Swift, Schneider, or JB Hunt, but those companies actually look "good" after you try this place.
