Pros

Good, stable company with family-friendly policies. Opportunity exists to switch career path, not only in Columbus but other Cummins Locations throughtout the world.

Cons

Not much top-down communication. Often feels like your work is done to make supervisor look good instead of working to meet top management goals. Constant changes in employee benefits - hard to keep current. Different benefit plans for different groups of employees/locations, i.e. plans different for hourly employees depending on what union they belong to, which plant they work at and how much seniority they have. Makes it hard for HR generalist to keep the plans seperate in order to counsel employees. Company would benefit greatly by standardizing benefits for all employees.

Pros

It is a fairly stable company. Things move slow and decisions are made by consensus and personal relationships. If you are liked by management, meaning you are part of the "diversity" group you are promoted. The company is helpful in taking time off to deal with family issues and is generally family friendly.

Cons

Economy's bad and everybody is cutting jobs. So, things are tight. Career advancement isn't a priority for management. Words and actions do not match. At times, there seems like there is no strategy to move forward. Everything is reactive. People do not have a sense of urgency to accomplish things.

Pros

Good place to learn Pro-E software as design engineer

Cons

Rating and ranking does not make sense. They rank all 22-23 salary grade people against each other which include design engineers (so called Designer), development engineers, test engineer, application engineers etc. Lower 10% people donot get annual raise at all. No vision benefit. People who do 3D modeling 24 X 7, cummins call them designer (Design Engineer). If you want to learn how to use Pro-E, then start your career at Cummins as design engineer. Waste too much money on duplicate tasks. From Alpha to Beta design changes a lot. Design engineers have do drafting work to create preliminary graphics which I think is kind of waste of time and money. It can be done cheaply by using drafters. But cummins uses drafter only for final design prints.
