Pros

Lots of opportunities to excel, and a ton of resources at your disposal to get the job done. There is always something that needs to be done or can be improved or requires documentation. With so many things always on the go, its hard to imagine a time when one could get bored with working for Cummins. The benefits at Cummins are another area that most companies would having difficulty beating. Cummins has standard 401K incentives, health and dental and very competative salaries. Additionally, Cummins has a yearly bonus of 0-16% of your salary depending on how the company fared in the last year.

Cons

There is a great deal of information to shift through when you first join Cummins. This is a result of many many years of technical reports, engineering standard works, and standard operating procedures that have accumulated over the years. In addition, Cummins has a plethora of acronyms that make common communication anything but for a beginner. Expect to be lost, confused, and frustrated for the first 6 to 9 months after hire. Don't expect too much help, your coworkers will try where they can, but they will likely be swamped with their own work to give you a thorough show of the ropes. Unfortunately, the only way to learn as a new hire is to get messy and make some mistakes of your own.

Pros

Good opportunities to explore various career paths for a given professional background, and to change disciplines with training & support. The ethics of the company are high. Compliance with EPA clean air rules is sought not as regulatory requirement, but as an actual obligation to the world. If you want your work to help the environment, this is a great place to do it.

Cons

The company core business as an independent engine manufacturer carries long term risk. The company must execute very well to succeed.

Pros

Excellent benefits in a market that doesn't always offer them. Also, great growth potential and a forward-thinking performance management system that helps employees to discern areas for development. Quarterly performance checks and annual reviews. Most managers recognize the need for a good work-life balance, and are flexible with employees that have occasional needs to accomodate family, etc. Cummins also has an excellent track record at recognizing and valuing diversity.

Cons

As an manufacturing company in the automotive industry, the fortunes of the company are largely tied to the heavy-duty truck market. However, the company has been careful to diversify over the last 5 years or so, and is now well positioned to ride out cyclical storms.
