Pros

You majored in Excel Spreadsheets You love sending emails back and forth about the same topic for years on end You prefer an environment free of organization You know it is not who what you know but who you know to get promoted

Cons

-15 meetings per week is not enough to go over the same information -the ability to improve my communication skills with hostile unprofessional people -4 years of repeating the same with zero progress we are not interested in improvement -What do you mean this is a public school system? We haven't discussed education once since I have been

Pros

- Mission - bettering the education of DC students - Smart, talented, driven colleagues - Interesting work, GREAT learning opportunities - Because of turnover (see below), there are always new opportunities for current employees

Cons

- Reactive, not proactive, environment - Insane turnover - Huge expectations of staff, lack of work-life balance, and little recognition from sr. management of that reality (or even just appreciation of how hard everyone works)

Pros

A chance to do meaningful work by working with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Most teachers and staff are committed to student achievement. Pro (and a con). I actually appreciated the IMPACT teacher evaluation system. I think that it is a good concept, but it ties to much value for certain teachers in testing grades to students' test results. Also, results have shown that teachers from schools in more affluent areas get higher scores on average than teachers in poorer areas. Yet, the system does not adjust in any way for the socioeconomic status of your students.

Cons

Lack of support within the classroom. Most schools are understaffed with large class sizes, therefore, teachers are expected to pick up the slack. No consistency. I worked at a school that was closed for "budgetary" reasons. Then, the school I got a new job with was set to close its middle school in two years due to redistricting. It's hard to plan to be in one place for very long.
