Pros

DESC does some great work and has some great employees. The work is pretty unique in the field and there's a lot of people at work who are really dedicated to the mission and the clients. The pay is very competitive for the field. Really amazing experience with lots of wonderful clients and coworkers, but it's hard.

Cons

Severe, persistent management problems. There's lots of politicking and infighting among leadership that gets in the way of workplace satisfaction. To succeed you need really good boundaries and a lot of integrity, since you won't find that in management. Good luck getting management to pay any attention to safety issues or care for clients. What good DESC manages to do comes at a high expense for its employees.

Pros

-Subsidized ORCA card -Good health insurance -Caseworkers and on the ground staff are absolutely wonderful and committed to DESC's mission -Opportunities to cross train

Cons

-Management is fine sweeping issues under the rug even if they're safety issues and ethical issues -You will go unheard if you reach out to management repeatedly about concerns -Management flips the script on whistleblowers and retaliates -Management would rather protect an age protected class versus trans individuals reporting safety issues/different set of work expectations -Management in my experience did not offer resources or offer to connect me to HR when I had been asking for support from my supervisor for months -Management did not provide resources when after months of me asking for support (a coworker in an age protected class then went on to attempt to get physical with me) nor did they connect me to HR or check in with me at all -Management will make you out to be the problem after their months of neglecting serious issues at hand begin to fester -Completely different set of expectations for trans/non cis male workers versus expectations for cis males at least in my experience/department -Will not collaborate with staff when it comes to serious concerns and issues

Pros

This company is only good for the experience.

Cons

It’s a total clown show, and majority of the people is brand new. The turnover is crazy and the rules/policies is always changing. They don’t care about the clients and sadly it’s just a money grabbing scheme. RUN, don’t WALK. Working here will make you lose your mind.

Thank you for your review. DESC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so we are unsure of what you mean. We choose to work with clients who experience severe and persistent mental health and substance use disorders. We are proud of and grateful for all of our staff who choose to work in this field. We have been working on various initiatives to increase employee attraction and retention, and we are happy to say that our turnover is now the lowest it has been in a decade. We look forward to continued positive change!
