Pros

Working with the clients is fulfilling and interesting, and the agency's philosophical approach to serving vulnerable populations is going in the right direction. If you get into a good program with a good supervisor and staff, you can learn a lot, and there's a lot of room to develop your own style of practice. DESC can provide you with invaluable work experience when it comes to serving people with who have histories of homelessness and co-occurring disorders.

Cons

Upper management appears to have formed its own inner circle and does not care about input from employees who actually work with the agency's clients. Consequently, upper management is detached from both their clients and their employees. Salary and benefits are low relative to the amazing work that staff do. High turnover rates result, making work even more difficult for staff who does remain. Employees are also provided with negligible training to deal with exceptionally difficult clients and working conditions, meaning you learn as you go, for better and worse.

Pros

Desc offers generous paid time off, and the work schedules are consistent. If you are new to the field, you can gain experience and exposure to working with a vulnerable population of adults who are homeless and experience severe and persistent mental health and substance abuse issues.

Cons

The pay is so low that my coworkers and I often compared notes on where there are food and other community resources that we were able to utilize so that we could encourage ends to meet. Due to this low pay, some employees don't work as hard as they could, leaving those with a half way decent work ethic to pick up the slack. Most new employees left within the first couple of months of hire. Bedbugs! They are everywhere, and they don't discuss it in the interview. Had they mentioned exposure to bedbugs, I would not have accepted the offer.

Pros

Some of the best and most rewarding experiences I have had in my life have been working with the clients here at DESC.

Cons

RCs, on-calls, janitorial staff and other "lower level" employees are given NO respect. I voiced concern about a manager to HR and they forwarded the email to that manager, forcing me to transfer to avoid conflict. This is endemic to the management culture at DESC, and lately it feels like they view their clients as a way to make money, not people they can help.
