A decent temp job, at best

Pros

Working with the kids was usually great. The organization does a great job of hiring young adults who have grown up through the program and in the communities they serve, which deserves to be praised.

Cons

The management is far from transparent. It was common for them to put their egos and career titles ahead of common sense and common decency, with respect to the people they were serving and the employees they were supervising. Professional development was often a joke. The office politics were toxic, and usually only due to a few people. Talented lower-level people seemed to be perceived as a threat to people higher up in the organization, given that going from part-time to full-time was next to impossible while I was there. They run through employees quickly, and the kids suffer because there is very little stability in authority figures.

Pros

There is such a culture of "love" and acceptance in the school. Students are usually at the center of decisions.

Cons

Staff are overworked and not acknowledged very much. All the students are Latinx and Black and the senior management is all white.

Pros

I love the kids. That's why I took the job. I didn't realize how little the pay was, and the hours are awkward, so getting a second job is difficult.

Cons

You are expected to work a lot for so little. I get paid 12k a year, but I write lesson plans, lead classes sometimes over 25 kids, and am constantly stressed. Nothing is organized. Every day the schedule is changing and kids act crazy. When something goes wrong you are often to blame for it. They don't warn you that many months you will not have hours to work, so 12k can quickly be closer to 11k.
