Great for new teachers, veterans look elsewhere.

Pros

Provides good tools for new teachers. The students are indoctrinated into the DSST way of learning, and are used to high expectations. In 11 years of teaching, I never had as low a failure rate as I did at DSST. This two things prevented me from giving the school less than 3 stars.

Cons

The students like it when you shake things up and teach the way YOU know best (i.e. student centered, innovative, self-paced, inquiry-based), but woe to the teacher that does this when anyone is watching. If you are an innovative teacher looking for a new position, do not look at DSST. Also, their understanding of content-based literacy strategies is so woefully lacking, it's almost funny.

High expectations of students to learn. High expectations for teachers. Teachers also serve as advisors for students, which helps build lasting relationship with students.

Cons

The amount of emphasis placed on testing and standardized tests makes it a place for not all student and teachers.

Great academic support in the classroom. Coworkers share similar ethos and culture. Pay is based on performance rather than tenure.

Cons

Long hours. Lack of coordination between schools and home office.
