Slowly eats your soul. The management is terrible and the fellow employees are manipulative/backstabbing. There is not one professional supervisor in FOM. The whole department is a joke among custodians. Don’t talk to anyone, and stay away from management and you’ll be fine. If drugs or drinking on the job bother you, don’t apply. If you are able to remove your brain from your head for 8 hours, you might be able to make it. If you can stand a gossipy environment where you are constantly having to defend yourself; this could be your new place of employment. The war between first shift and third shift seems like a joke...it’s not. When you choose a first or third shift position, you are really picking the Sharks is the Jets. It’s like walking straight into West Side Story. The pay, benefits, and personal time are amazing. But, is it worth your sanity? Your peace of mind? Three years was enough for me. I thought I found a dream job, but I just stepped into one of the biggest facades the upper valley has to offer.

*Typical small-town cronyism pervades staff culture and disrupts morale. Apparently, the less educated the employee, the more respect he/she receives. *The administration pays lip service to "diversity and retention," but the town and campus has a persistently homogenous culture that goes unquestioned. *The local public school caters to a dual-career as opposed to a dual-income community, ie.) elite. I found the parents far too busy and competitive with one another to genuinely care about the quality of their children's public education. *Hanover is "great" for doctor and senior administrator families who can afford to pay for extra tutoring to make up for the mediocre education. *Expect your staff position to be terminated if you become disabled at any point of your employment; includes maternity leave. The college evidently has its own interpretation of FMLA. *It's common knowledge that the pay is low relative to other Ivies and restricts one's housing options to live outside of Hanover. *Unqualified employees are promoted simply to save money. Google "Dartmouth" in the news tab and it isn't hard to see why.
