Pros

I know of no other place where there's a comparably high level of research and capability as well as a collegial culture among Faculty. People there actually care - about each other, about teaching, and about many other things outside their own sphere.

Cons

There's too much fat in the system, and leadership is - as it often is in universities - diffuse and frankly, untrained, resulting in poor decisions, and usually, decisions-by-consensus when the unpopular choice is often necessary.

Pros

The poeple are wonderful, and the area is beautiful. Once you figure out how to navigate some of the systems in place there are opportunities for professional development and there is support to pursue that. health and tuition benefits are good.

Cons

There are very limited opportunities for raises and promotions. The compensation system is structured in a ridgid way that locks salaries in below industry standards. The area, while beautiful and family oriented, is not an inexpensive place to live, salaries of mid-level staff do not match the cost of living in the area. I breifly had the same job title as my husband, while I have higher level degrees than him he was paid more to do the same job...gender equality does not yet exist at Dartmouth. While the instituiton has many resources, and is continually growing its facilities, employees are offered few "perks" for working for a large private college.
