Pros

Great, interesting work. Friendly people from a variety of backgrounds. Professional development encouraged and paid for. A chance to travel occasionally. Promotion from within. Depending on your department and supervisor, you may be able to have some flexibility in your schedule and tasks.

Cons

The pay is not enough to support one person (let alone a family) in the Dartmouth College area. The cost of living is close to that of the Boston area, but the pay was slightly lower than I had been making in the Midwest in a medium-sized city.

Small community but coordination challenges

Pros

Benefits including health insurance & vacation time are definitely plus points. Administrative staff are generally polite and try to be helpful. Faculty are committed to their students & sense of school spirit among students is high.

Cons

Maintaining a "harmonious" relationship with colleagues is often given preference over honest feedback and discussion about actual professional competence of employees -- the lack of which can often impede progress within campus and with the institution's external relations; Coordination across departments on projects is more challenging than expected for a relatively small academic institution.

Its great if you're in management. If you're not, then start looking for another job.

Cons

-no communication between workers and management -unilateral authority by management -low salary -scale back of health benefits -long hours -did I mention low salary?
