Leadership changes provide reason for cautious optimism

Pros

As many have stated, the people at DR are amazing. Intimidatingly intelligent, very thoughtful, and just fun to be around. I'm thankful every day to work with such colleagues who always push me to be a better version of myself. I also truly believe in this product. I worked as a data scientist for several years before joining DR, and our platform is a real game-changer for ML practitioners.

Cons

We had an incredibly rough summer of 2022 both in terms of press and performance. This led to a major shake-up of the ELT, which was very welcomed by the rank-and-file and frankly long overdue. But it also led to a massive RIF---33% were let go in August on top of 7% let go in May. Previous leadership over-grew the company. We never should have had so many employees to begin with, and now we're all feeling the brunt of such an irresponsible action. However, we have new leadership over almost every area of the company, and I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. It's too soon to say but I'm hopeful the new company will be much more data-driven, nimble, and collaborative.

Pros

If hustle culture is what you’re after, then this place is for you! Nothing like a drill-instructor approach of “you’re not sending enough emails or making enough calls” to fire you up! Cool logo tho. Good product that hasn’t been seriously developed in a while, which allowed the AWS, Google, and Azures of the world to catch up. If you like reality TV, and want to LIVE in that type of world, you’ll find this place exciting!

Cons

Where do I start? Lol! A majority of people RIFd hadn’t been at the company for more than a year. Pressure, pressure, pressure to grow the business in ‘21, and then cut 40% of the company in a quarter less than a year later. Poor financial planning. While the vocal minority of people that wanted the C-level fired, they got what they wanted, but those same vocal people are largely remaining silent in the wake of all of those 40% of employees that were let go. GTM and “old guard” didn’t see eye-to-eye…created a lot of tension. Will def want to know how the next company I interview is handling this change management. I truly feel bad for those that DO stay. How does one instill confidence in a prospect/customer about the viability of your business when it’s been positioned that ONE bad quarter resulted in 40% of the company being laid off? Sounds like more shenanigans. If I’m a competitor, I’m using this all day if I’m competing against Datarobot. Great product at Datarobot for sure…but poor execution strategy. While the market is hot for AI/ML, has Datarobot shot itself too many times in the foot? My senses tell me that the RIF survivors will voluntarily find new gigs somewhere else before the year ends. This is like the WeWork series on Hulu, only Datarobot isn’t that significant.

Pros

-Opportunity to develop and progress your career with very smart people -Level of conversation you have here is more compelling than in any place you will ever work. Many people strive to work at the C-Level and Board levels, but few do. This is unique within both this space, and software -Fantastic product and team focused on deploying this -Space that will not only survive but thrive, during the economic downturn due to the mandate to have AI/ML in your strategy

Cons

-Communication internally is not where it needs to be, and the biggest con. I am confident that the talent of our leadership will help improve this, which will help everyone be on the same page daily -Resource reallocation needs to happen. There are a lot of very smart people that we can do a better job of spreading across our customers -Execution of the little things needs to improve. We can't drive transformational strategy if we can't tie our shoes - everyone needs to focus on being the best at their job
