Leadership does not like to be challenged

I worked for Delta for 7 years. Although it was my first job out of college, by the time I left the company, I was making less than what I was making when I first started Delta. Normally, you would expect to have a faster increase in your salary in the first several years of your career. What's more, I was getting at least a 4 out of 5 in every performance review I ever went through. What made me so mad was that I found out that a colleague of mine who had a lower title than me was making 20% more than I did. Finally, I gave up on Delta and took another job with another employer for twice the salary. Unfortunately, many bright people with great skills had to do that.
