Pros

I learned a tremendous amount at Demandbase. There were a lot of experienced, smart, hard working people during my time at the company. There are some really great leaders that were very supportive and will continue to be mentors in my future. Demandbase is able to hire and sell aggressively and therefore bring in a lot of revenue. I think they will eventually have a large exit. The advertising product is the cash cow for the company and more recently their website side of the business started picking up in the market. The CEO is a smart and nice guy and takes the time to connect with employees. The benefits are amazing and the pay is pretty good. They moved to an unlimited PTO policy, but often that is dependent on the manager's view on if you deserve it or not.

Cons

The culture is disingenuous (marketing tactic), aggressive, inclusive for some, and promotes based on age/gender/or other irrelevant factors rather than performance. Leadership is full of old school middle-aged white males with very old corporate ways of managing a business. I had two of the worst bosses of my career during my time at Demandbase. A lot of the middle management lack the skills needed to make a team successful, yet continue to be promoted. "Optics" are important, I used to see an executive walking around the office counting the number of people at their desk. The technology is great in theory, but lacks enough transparency on the data side. They hide a lot from their customers and paint a false picture of the technology's capability. They often release half-baked products to market and put the pressure on customer-facing positions to deal with the upset client when it breaks.

Pros

Unique product and market position, cool forward thinking technology theory, great cultural events, great ad team and product. Great pay scale!

Cons

The management is stuck in the 1990's. ALL upper management are white middle aged men. Middle and lower management has some women, but they all must be married with children. These seem to be the only requirements for the job. Promotions are not made on merit but rather age, resulting in customer facing managers who have no forward thinking and are completely ignorant of the product, along with having no management experience. This has lead to 8 top performing employees either leaving or being shown the door in the last 6 months. If you are under 40, and unmarried, this is not the place you will be promoted, but they will pay you well!

Great Employees; Poor management

Pros

The product is really good for enterprise-level companies and those with extra expenditure for advertising and marketing who are willing to take "the plunge". The CEO is a very cool and nice guy and cares about the company culture. He is personable and gets to know everyone by name. 100% benefits paid for which is awesome. Good work/life balance. Nice offices. They have snacks. The "regular" workers are great and there is a good sense of support for success. The ad product is really good and a game-changer. The ad sales team is very successful.

Cons

Executives and management: The goodwill ends at the CEO. They lack diversity in upper management; a homogenous group of middle-aged white males. Lots of closed-door meetings; poor communication downstream. Middle-managers are first-time managers. They lack creativity, rarely ask for input from front-line employees and have inconsistent management expectations. HR pushes "best place to work" with rah-rah meetings. Chief Product Officer left after 8 months. A CFO was there for a short period and left quickly; both positions are not filled. Product: It seems like they cannot retain good Ruby Developers and rely on over-worked, middle-tier contributors. Executives continue to push product as a SaaS model but reports show it only successful in their Ad (non SaaS) business. IMHO, going for SaaS valuation is an unattainable goal. Product has barely changed. It is a database that has value when plugged into other products. Innovation seems lacking. Compensation and Sales: Unattainable sales goals with the "SaaS" product; only a few people hit quota. It apprears that there is preferential treatment with handouts to certain employees, I have seen frustration and high-turnover on the sales team. Addressable market is very small. Career growth: No mentorship programs. There is an unidentified path for junior employees to move up.
