Difficult to survive in "soft money" world where you are constantly fighting for your funding.

Pros

Funding opportunities for graduate students are phenomenal. Great people, awesome atmosphere. Work life balance is excellent, and schedule is generally flexible. Practically unparalleled ability to make a genuine contribution to the betterment of the world through conducting high-quality and forward-thinking research.

Cons

Compensation. You are paid significantly less than you would be in the private sector for any given work performed.

Pros

Work life balance is great. Hours are quite flexible. People are very friendly and respectful. Lots of collaboration among scientists from different divisions and universities.

Cons

Now after I left I couldn't think of many cons. Its location is definitely not great. Pace is very slow. Management needs improvement because administration eats up too much research funding.
