Not bad but could be better
Pros
- Basically an open floor plan office but with good amount of privacy. Typically 1-2 teams share an open space on the one side of the building, so noise level is usually quite moderate. Office plan is actually quite good compared to other companies. - Lots of internal job opportunities if you want to take a break from with your current work. - Lots of knowledge when it comes to enterprise integration. It was my business unit so I knew it best. - Junior developers will get to do real work (i.e client projects) soon - There are internal technical academies (API and integration academy) and quite recently started integration architect academy. - Colleges are always ready to help you should you require any help.
Cons
- Business units are deep silos with no visibility to other BUs - unless you are explicitly working with persons from other BUs. - Knowledge sharing (outside your team(s)) is an exceptional effort rather than something that happens on a regular basis. And current processes make it difficult to share information between projects. - Even though it is getting better, too much information is shared only need to know basis rather than transparently and available to everyone - Apparently there's company-wide Agile and DevOps thingies going on but no clear plan how to apply them to projects effectively. Projects typically apply some kind of DevOps/Agile methods/processes, but it varies from project to project. - Client work is everything. Too little effort is put to internal tool/process development (within a project). Retrospects are held irregularly, so continuous improvement is very random. - Even though larger projects/teams can be seen as autonomous teams, there's always one person who does this kind work and other person who does that kind of work, and so on. Domain knowledge isn't properly shared between team members. - Digia is very conservative when it comes to technical choices. If you are looking for the latest and the greatest tools/programming languages, you probably won't find it here. Most likely there are differences how above mentioned issues are handled between different BUs/projects- they may be better or worse than what I've experienced myself. But all in all, Digia isn't too bad an employer. I was a happy camper quite a while until I started reading more about DevOps, Agile, and Lean. It got me to put more value than earlier on a transparent corporate culture and active knowledge sharing, and I started seeing it missing in Digia.
