biggest downside of working here is that we regularly get parties of 6+ (im talking 8-16 people almost everyday) because families and large friend groups dine in and there is NO automatic gratuity… the bill can be $600 and the guests have the option to leave nothing. even if we get $0, we still have to tip out front of house 6% of our sales so we’re basically paying to serve people. it’s ridiculous. i’ve taken care of a 12 top before and their bill was $700 and they left me $50. so i really only got $8 from that table. din tai fung always preaches about the “guest experience” and apparently adding a tip ruins that for them. they dont care how it affects their staff. i wouldn’t mind it as much but dtf expects us to bend over backwards for our guests and we get nothing out of it. funny how din tai fung wants to have a fine dining image but their clientele is people who eat hundreds of dollars worth of food but cant afford to tip. this isn’t a grievance exclusive to me. all of my coworkers complain about this.
