Discovery used to be a great place to work…

Pros

Some of the people are kind (I’m a mid-level manager), and I enjoy collaborating with other teams at times and I’ve made a lot of friends there over the years - so if you’re around long enough to make great relationships, that’s been a huge plus! We all commiserate about how awful our jobs are. Another positive is that it’s very autonomous. You can phone it in most weeks and no one will ever know since there’s no tracking or data driven decisions. They also used to have good bonuses, but with the new direction of the company (or lack their of) we’re all afraid that’s going away.

Cons

Terrible management from above, non-competing salaries, the culture has become cutthroat, we have a now out of touch CEO, Sr. Management (SVP and above) are old school and awful. Long story short, the company is scrambling to save optics and come off as diverse, inclusive, and forward thinking…and Discovery has not become any of those things. I used to love working here! It’s sadly just become a joke. They can’t keep up with the number of people quitting, and with a big merger coming up, lay off blood baths are inevitable (and they happen all the time here on a regular basis - but the same terrible Sr. Management, SVP+, stays the same). If you’re looking for a forward thinking, collaborative and smart company…you are unfortunately going to have to look elsewhere as Discovery continues to be late to the game. Sr. Management just copies what other big tech and media companies do, but then we don’t even do it well…so new business ventures are constantly failing all the time. Everyone is internally talking about how poorly we’re doing in the streaming game when compared to the other big streamers/products, and it shows. Morale is at an all time low…it’s become pretty miserable.

Not a place for growth

Pros

Pretty good pay and benefits

Cons

Toxic culture and low morale. Very little autonomy, which hinders innovation. Leadership is pretty elusive and only swoop in when they need something. Not a good place to work if you want to grow creatively. Lots of turnover and HR is also pretty useless.
