Pros

The people at the company. Great people with terrific talent being squandered by upper management that is utterly clueless.

Cons

Upper management that runs projects with an iron fist, threatens entire departments with termination due to his dislike for the product and has produced zero results in over a year.

Pros

I have no complaints about the pay and vacation was comparable to similar jobs in the market.

Cons

Leadership in general and upper management/executive especially are completely clueless for the most part. As soon as I started I got the feeling that my colleagues were all looking for work, having just been through it myself I could recognize the signs. Morale was abysmal adn people walked around very tight-lipped afraid to make any suggestions or give their input. There is no organizational or departmental vision, just a lot of lip service to values that are preached but never actually practiced. I cannot believe this company has managed to stay afloat so long, it can only be due to the initial value that all of the smaller companies that it swallows up bring, until they stifle all of the initiative out of the incredibly smart people and leave them with no choice but to leave or descent into a career that will go nowhere because they do not get to practice the things they are so good at and bring value to the company. There is a culture of prevention. Preventing the smartest employees from excelling and helping the company grow and succeed. It is the anti-success organization. If you want a dead end career or something temporary to get you to the next pay grade then this is the place for you. All the smart ones get out as soon as they figure it out. Just don't wait too long.

DE continues to disappoint.

Pros

Reasonable benefits. Fine for entry level, but not long term.

Cons

Low salaries and poor raises. They do not value their employees. They do not understand the life cycle of technology products or how to plan for the creation/evolution of the "next" product. Shortsighted; habitually rush inferior products to market. They would prefer to sell a poor product to 10 people for a nickel today rather than invest time and money in a quality product that will sell for $10 in 6 months to 100 people that will be lined up waiting for the product. Too many managers and not enough workers. Cronyism runs rampant in upper management. If one makes a bad decisions and/or wastes company funds, rather than getting fired or demoted, they get a lateral transfer or even a promotion. There are many companies that fall under the DE umbrella, and not all of those companies appear to be managed this poorly. Many of the former print companies successfully converted to web based businesses. I cannot speak to how well they are managed or how well they treat their employees. I am only familiar with companies that began as tech companies. There are many good people at DE including many in middle management. Unfortunately, they are not the ones making the important decisions. I have tried to keep my evaluation as unbiased as possible, but this is, after all, my opinion. However, having discussed these topics on more than one occasion with multiple people, I can assure anyone that my opinions are shared by many current and former employees.
