Pros

Fun blossoming industry. Really cool team members. We move very fast. Very progressive company pushing for cannabis reform.

Cons

Since the cannabis industry is so young, volatile, and ultimately still federally illegal, we have to make big changes all the time. This can be hard to get used to. Also no 401k match.

Thanks for the review. We’re continually adapting and evolving as we approach complex and sometimes unpredictable changes in the industry. We absolutely agree - if there is one constant, it’s change and it's exciting! We are always seeking to improve communication to improve alignment and have implemented bi-weekly huddles, monthly Q&As, roadmap sessions, and other cross-functional opportunities to stay connected as we navigate changes on behalf of our customers.

Pros

Dutchie really does value community, work/life balance, and the people who work at Dutchie are amazing! I absolutely love the team that I work with and I never feel like I'm working alone, even though I'm at home in my PJs. The Support team is seriously the best! Also, Dutchie does amazing work with the Last Prisoner Project. It's really amazing to be a part of a company that is about equality and justice.

Cons

The starting pay for E-Commerce Support reps is low. I think that it should be higher to be on target with the market. Also, our health insurance changed this year and it's not as good as the previous one. The plan we have now does not cover all the prescriptions that the former one did.

Thanks for the thoughtful review. We’ve share Total Rewards Statements with employees at every performance review cycle to show where their current compensation falls within the range for their role. We are committed to providing equitable and competitive compensation across all teams and positions. Our Support team is the best of the best - we agree! We are thrilled to hear that you've experienced a strong sense of belonging with your team.

Growing Pains

Pros

- Possibly the most mature company in cannabis tech - SLT understands their assignment. The level of transparency is a demonstrable sign of maturity that restored a pinch of faith in the survival of the company - The culture of Dutchie has grown up since the CEO/CPO exit. A lot of the start up tropes have faded away and it feels like we’re now focused on making a sustainable org come to fruition - Teams can really band together to build something awesome! It’s cannabis so there’s no rules and everything’s happening at once so when there’s a need, we all come together a pull rabbits out of the hat. - Benefit costs are good. This might seem silly but in previous roles health insurance premiums could cost more than a mortgage so that is significant.

Cons

- The org chart has remained top heavy for a while. While skill positions are filled after a lengthy battle to prove the need, it seems that management will hire amongst themselves at the drop of a hat. This is money that could be spent better training a large swath of the staff that’s not experienced in the industry. - Cash compensation has lagged for a few years. The volunteers-only philosophy is fine but you have to (HAVE TO) pay your teams a reasonable and current wage. Total compensation is great, but make sure that it’s appropriately balanced. I am not interested in investing in equity until Dutchie is interested in investing in my salary. It becomes a one-sided relationship. -Advancement is a mirage. There are some veterans in the company that desperately deserve a chance for growth and development, but the preference is to hire from outside the company AND industry. That’s insulting! We’ve had great team members leave of their own volition b/c they are overlooked for advancement, and 60% of the name-brand external hires either leave or are shown the door. - Management doesn’t really understand leadership. There’s a lot of talk about career check ins, performance management, employee development and quality time with SLT but unless you’re needed for something or you reach out for a pressing action, you don’t exist past your direct manager. In 3 years, I’ve had 4 skip-level meetings in total, the other 20 or so have been cancelled by the leader. -If you’re good at your job, you’re going to be good at everyone else’s job. While it can look like job security, it means that people will continually lean on you to prop them up in terms of expertise, and you can get stuck in place.
