Pros

ERM doesn't even deserve ZERO stars.

Cons

I, and many other Partners and Consultants, were recruited to start a new line of service at ERM. I wish I'd known at the time that this was ERM's third or fourth attempt to start this new line of service ... I would have walked away and preserved my physical health, mental health, career, and dignity. IMHO, ELT not only starved all of us new Partners and Consultants of marketing support and leadership support, they actively blocked all of our B.D. efforts and would not allow other Partners to cross-sell our line of service. For example, upon meeting ELT for the first time, I was flatly told that "We do not know what you do (professionally), we do not WANT to know what you do (professionally), and we will not support you (and my team) at ERM." What?!?!? IMHO, ELT set impossible and unreasonable metrics for our teams, and they gave us no time to ramp up the business. Any rational business development person knows it takes time to build new client relationships where clients will trust you enough to invite you to bid on projects, especially when you are offering a new line of service. ELT also expected all of our work to be done remotely ... which is not how our work is accomplished. ELT also expected us to win work by quoting 2x and 3x the market labor rate for our services in a very competitive industry. That was a recipe for disaster for this new line of service. IMHO, the silly "Good Cop/Bad Cop" routine between members of ELT would have been funny if people's careers, livelihoods, and health weren't at stake. We all were purged during The Great Layoff Event of '24. ERM recently hired new replacements to restart this Line of Business. BEWARE: I wish the New Hires luck, but IMHO they all are Dead Men Walking; ELT has a history of not allowing this Line of Service to succeed, for unknown reason(s).

Pros

ERM is an enormous consultancy that offers stability and opportunities. You can work with high-profile clients and have a genuinely big impact in the sustainability realm. The pay tends to be better than smaller consultancies. Your experience will depend significantly on what department you're working in, as some are more balanced and better organised than others.

Cons

The decisions taken by leadership often don't reflect the sustainability values of the company. There's an inverted pyramid structure, with lots of seniors who do little and then juniors who are worked to the bone. The company seems to run on ambitious promises made by partners that were then not delivered. These same partners then fly off to the States for 'summits' and frequent oceanariums and steakhouses, whilst their teams are left to pick up the pieces of the bad decisions they've made. In my particular department, we were working on a new service that eventually failed to gain market traction, due to the cycle of compulsive overpromising and underdelivering. My team and I were lied to about our job security, and vast swathes were sent packing at a moment's notice. I was lucky to be able to jump before I was pushed.
