Pros

Global company = potential variety of projects and experience for environmental engineer professionals. Many people stay, so they must be doing something right.

Cons

Partner-centric culture (read: "if you're not a partner, you're JUST support staff), and I saw that attitude extended even toward environmental engineer professionals. Do as you're told. This said, exceptions exist (though, through social media networking sites, I've seen many of them leave the company since I have). Admittedly, I joined ERM from an organization that was MUCH more collaborative, creative, encouraging, and growth-oriented, so the transition to what felt like an oppressive culture was particularly difficult for me. Low salary scale.

A Company with Growing Pains

Pros

- In more renovated offices, a great working environment. - In general, great people with good attitudes. - Ability to work on many interesting projects. - As a result, gain many valuable skills quickly. - Corporate is pushing collaboration between offices, countries. Opportunity to work in many locations and with people on a global scale. - Relatively flexible working hours and locations (from home, from other offices if traveling) if you have the right manager and working group.

Cons

- Compensation is very low for the type of company this is. Management claims they perform benchmarking and ERM is on par with competitors, which may be true in the environmental engineering and testing realm. However, as the company grows and performs more management consulting functions their competitors in this realm are at a much higher scale, and employees therefore expect more. - Very low vacation time. - Very few USA holidays given to employees. Many bank holidays or government/school holidays are not observed. Problematic for those with kids, but excused as on those days employees typically choose to work from home. - Typical consulting stress/problems related to billable hours goals. - Jack-of-all-trades need can get a bit trying. If you're a scientist who is great at science and projects but terrible at selling work, you will not fare well. - Collaborating with other regions can sometimes be difficult and there may be infighting, as a remnant of the company previously being franchised. Management is trying to discourage this, but it is sometimes still present.

Pros

Some job flexibility. Some of the people were nice. If you're young and perceived to be an up and comer you can learn some good skills.

Cons

I worked in an evolving process risk group. 3 or 4 out of 27+ knew what they were doing. The rest were mostly young folks with no operating experience working on projects they knew nothing about. l almost felt guilty billing customers. If you're a seasoned professional expect to learn nothing new; no training or opportunity to learn anything. A few chosen young folks put on the fast track learn some new stuff, but no one else. Expectation is that you will work overtime. My job called for 98% billability with a 30 min. staff meeting each day that was part of the calculation - you do the math. Incentive bonus was removed for this year because "too many projects ran over budget". If the above was just my experience I'd take my lumps and be quiet, but many in my former group would echo my sentiments. Many good people have left after I did. As it was I left and have no regrets - had a wonderful new job that paid 30% more in 6 weeks.
